Grocery shopping – what’s your “style”?

We shop online with Safeway and they deliver when we request.

I also shop online Jim. I do mine fortnightly and they deliver it right into the kitchen and it's easy to pack away as it's already sorted plus I get free delivery. I physically go into a supermarket maybe 5 times per year.

When I shop physically, I always make a list. I also shop online every and have a big load delivered to my door every 3-4 weeks. Both ways can be quite time consuming, but I enjoy online shopping more.

I have to admit I don't shop online..I've been sorely (literally) tempted many times but I have friends who are personal shoppers and they say that much of the stuff that's 'picked' is left out in boxes for ages in the warehouse before it's collected by the driver, and refrigerated and frozen food is not kept at cool enough temps..so it's always put me off getting it delivered.

I remember one afternoon standing at the till in a frozen food shop and there was 5 full crates of food sitting at the end of the till in the store , .bear in mind this was all frozen food not even being kept cool , and when a customer started racking through it thinking it was sale items the cashier said that they were customers' home delivery but they were waiting for a replacement driver to arrive from an agency because there usual driver hadn't turned in that day...I was horrified, because this stuff had probably been sitting in those crates potentially for hours !!

Holly, Those horror stories may be true in the UK but not here, our food is fresh, the trucks have three compartments, freezer, refrigerated, and room temp. You pick your delivery time (1 hour windows). Never had a bad experience in dozens of deliveries.

Something I enjoy is trying different stores sometimes. Hubby has one particular one he likes to shop at. It's modest sized by supermarket standards so he doesn't have to walk endless aisles and he knows where everything is. I like to go treasure hunting sometimes and find unique things. One store locally has an entire aisle of East Indian products. Nice change from Tuna Helper, ya know?

Jim yes you can get one hour deliveries here too, and those instances I would expect the food to be still fresh..(and the delivery vans are laid out the same way)...but remember most people don't order a one hour delivery and that's possibly where the porblem lies..in that the items get picked and then left out sometimes waiting for collection by the delivery guy

#Fur..I agree even tho' I hate grocery shopping with a passion, I do like to stroll around the Chinese supermarkets, I always find something different to cook.. :D

That sounds awful holly, very unprofessional and bad for business. Ours online grocers are excellent.

Hi Cookie of course I'm not inferring that all supermarkets do the same, but I do know some personal shoppers who work for 2 of our most well known Supermarkets who have told the same tale...:(

I used an online grocery delivery service a couple times back in 1999 – it was called Peapod. I was recuperating from surgery, and the service was EXCELLENT. Sadly, there aren’t any such services here anymore even though this is a large city. I wish stores would get back into it. OTOH I do like to pick my produce and meats.

Seems our online grocery service really took off in the past 2-3 years and its a booming business. I see their trucks all over town, and deliver to our building alone 2-3 times a day from early morning til night. They also have a loyalty card redeemable for cash rebates. A real necessity in a big city like this and it would be stupid for them to pass off inferior products - I find all their foods always top-notch. Hopefully someday a good one like this will come your way, holly.

Oh cookie we've had online grocery service for many years ...as far back as 2011 the public were getting fed up with it..even tho' we're told our Grocery service is the most sophisticated in the whole world ..even 4 or 5 years ago people were getting suspicious about the quality of the ingredients they were receiving.

Have a read of this article from the Daily Mail back in 2011.

Clearly there are many millions of people just here in the Uk who do the vast majority of their grocery shopping online and are happy with it...but sometimes when I go to the supermarket and the queues are a mile long I just wonder if anyone really can be shopping online..and what would happen if everyone stopped having everything delivered, and decided to shop back in the old fashioned way , because given those packed shops..there wouldn't be any room for anyone more .. LOL

Very true, holly. Our supermarkets are incredibly packed too and now some are open 24-7 for the night owls. I try to go at non-busy times to avoid the after-work rush but I don't think I will ever revert to all in-store shopping. With so many people working from home, and all the baby boomers getting older, the last thing they want to do is fight crowds for groceries. I used to love shopping, but it doesn't appeal any more, I think a lot of people are starting to feel that way -- recreational shopping might be something more reserved for the very rich, but they also have personal shoppers and household staff for this purpose, so who knows?

In our town there is too much competition, too many grocery stores. Many are almost empty and many have closed. Walmart has taken a lot of business, but even Walmart is not that crowded. You have to pick your times carefully though. Avoid 5pm when office work lets out, Saturdays completely, until evening, and the days leading up to a holiday.

Nancy, dp yo mean the parking lots are almost empty (i.e., not many customers) or that the shelves are almost empty (they're not bothering to keep stocked)?

I hate to get groceries therefore, I only do it once a month!!!! Years ago, I took inventory of how much of what we needed for a month and I kept a list of it. Once a month I take that list and go around and compare the list with how many we have left of everything and I purchase the difference. For example, if it takes 2 canisters of coffee to get us through a month and we are down to 1, then I purchase 1. This have been working for many years and this way, I don't have to do it but once a month!
