When two people tried to break into Mr Everitt's home, the cat did everything she could to alert him of the danger, the 68-year-old told the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal.
He was first woken by Bandit meowing in the kitchen.
The cat then raced into Mr Everitt's bedroom and jumped on his bed, where she began pulling the blanket off him and clawing at his arms.
Mr Everitt knew something was wrong.
"She had never done that before," he said.
"I went, 'What in the world is wrong with you?'"
He got up to investigate and saw two young men outside his back door.
One had a handgun and the other was using a crowbar to try to pry the door open, he said.
Mr Everitt said by the time he retrieved a handgun and returned to the kitchen, the would-be intruders had fled.
He told the newspaper he did not call the police.
He said the situation could have been different without Bandit.
"It did not turn into a confrontational situation, thank goodness," Mr Everitt said.
"But I think it's only because of the cat."

Cats usually get the short end of the stick to dogs as home defenders, but…in India, a cat prevented a King Cobra from entering a home, on guard and unflinching for thirty minutes against the threat!

In folklore, magic, and myth, cats are well known as agents that can keep evil spirits at bay, tiny tigers possessed of an angelic spirit…
