We used to call them "BUFFS". Don't ask me to explain. Well, anyway, it starts out: Big, Ugly, Fat, F*****s.

But what nice bombers....go anywhere in the world on missions (With refueling if necessary.)

Years ago, we lived 10 miles from Griffis AFB in Rome, NY. Now defunct. The C-135 and B-52s flight went right in back of our house. This was a SAC base and when they had their practice runs, it was quite a site. One year, a 52 went down near Floyd, NY but was kept pretty quite at the time. Rumor was that it carried nuclear weapons.

B-52 Images and a Few Facts

Had main wheels close together under fuselage, no nose wheel! The wings were supported each tip with a tiny wheel underneath, visible below.

Here's the load one can carry!

To steer the plane while rolling, the two main landing gear rotate about their center axis. One of few planes capable of rolling SIDEWAYS on it's wheels! An amazing airplane, all around! Congratulations Boeing, job well-done! imp

I studied this plane while in college, but I have forgotten a lot about it. I do remember concluding that this plane was an awesome aircraft with amazing facts. It was the right plane at the right time. When I look at the plane, it looks weird without a nose wheel and in fact, with the plane only having eight wheels on four bogies, it makes me wonder how they were able to hold all of the plane's weight. (I need to go back and study the design to figure this out.) Eight engines must have produced an enormous amount of thrust.
