Gushy Like A Hotdog

That's the stuff of nightmares! I had a rattlesnake on my patio several years ago. Three of my dogs had it surrounded, not more than a foot from it, and it was coiled up and hissing. I was panicked thinking it was going to bite the dogs--or me. Luckily, when I called the dogs off they listened and immediately came in the house. The snake took off and I never saw it again. For days I worried it would be back.
 
We get snakes in our yard, quite a few of them around my area, open space behind my house. The bull and garden snakes I leave alone, if I see a rattler I kill it or ask my husband to. Years back my dog was bitten in the back leg by a rattler that was hiding in the weeds, I don't think he was even aware of the snake when it happened. He was holding up his leg when I let him into the house. I shaved the area and saw clearly it was a bite.

Soon he started panting heavily and drooling (something he never did), I rushed him to the emergency vet hospital and they gave him some anti-venom, IVs and kept him overnight. Luckily he was okay the next day, never did see or find that particular snake. Like your dogs, mine always kept their distance from snakes.
 
SB, glad your dog pulled though O.K. from the rattlesnake bite. I keep a sharp eye out for rattlesnakes, not concerned about bull or garden snakes, although they give you quite a 'start' when one is curled up in the middle of the living room floor.

Here's the type of snake that has gotten into the house, several times; don't mind them but if they can get in......

Thanks! Good photo, we have had some small garden snakes in the garage and porch, and one in the basement in my laundry room. Here's a small baby I saw one day on a walk on a paved trail behind my house.

A couple of days ago, while mowing the lawn, I saw a huge 5' Black Snake ambling across the yard. I drove the mower over towards it, and "escorted" it over to the weeds at the edge of the yard. Those are good snakes, and help insure that we don't have any problems with mice, etc., so I like to see them around. Luckily, I've only seen one venomous snake...a copperhead...in the years we've lived here. I chased it into the woods, and never saw it again.
 
I've encountered and handled snakes all my life, but for some reason I don't recognise whether a snake is 'benign', or a rattler, based solely on their skin markings.

When I see the diamond shaped head and rattles, then I know for sure. ;)

I have a pet California King snake named Beethoven, believe-it-or-not, he is at least 24 years old. Yea, he's getting elderly, has trouble getting the feeder mice, but eventually gets the dirty deed done.

I used to have a ball python named Lucky, but for reasons unknown, she up and died. :(
