Happening too often with physicians

The link Anne just posted regarding a dr in Missouri who killed his wife, then himself, (with their 4 kids in the home,) and Dr. MacNeil who was finally found guilty of murder...the list goes on and on. It's particularly shocking because we hold them to such a higher standard. Hard to imagine they can be just as psycho as anyone else. I'm still wondering how Dr. MacNeil was allowed to practice when he was discharged from the Army for Schizophrenia, but I suppose that's nothing you would put on your resume/application and considered confidential info.

The story in MO got me too, Anne, just glad he didn't kill the kids as well. But look at situation he left them in...we can only hope there are close family members who can raise them.

He was one more very sick and selfish individual....

Katy, I wondered that too; about Dr Macneil...wouldn't a background check show why he was discharged? I suppose that is confidential, but you'd think they'd want to know something like that to make sure he was being treated for it; especially when he was in the medical field.

Thinking also of Drew Peterson here; a policeman - far as I know, they still haven't found his second wife. Scary, but a reminder to us that they are just as human as the rest of us in spite of their occupations, or the promises they take to save lives and protect others.

As for the local doctor, I'm sure more things will come out as time passes. Just so incredibly sad, especially when there's children involved; could be the kids know a lot more of what was happening. How horrible that the children had to find them like that.

It's because he didn't get that raise from minimum wage. They really should have bumped him up to $7.75.

Just because a person is a "professional" it doesn't necessarily follow that they're anything but human. Psychiatrists and psychologists have some of the worst mental afflictions; physicians, until relatively recently, were actually paid endorsers of cigarette brands, and my own family doctor used to listen to my heart while sucking on a cigarette, blowing smoke in my face. Cops? They're often subjected to the worst of humanity, so I would think that their balance point is a precarious one.

Even in my own case - I've been called a "Master" of martial arts, an expert, a great guy, and many people swear that I'm a saint, yet personally I KNOW that I can be as down and dirty as any lowlife on the streets. It's all just a matter of self-control, self-awareness and self-discipline.

My brothers career was in LE, and we used to discuss different aspects of it quite a bit....I recall saying I couldn't understand how anyone could kill another person (other than in wartime), and he insisted that we are capable, given the right circumstances. I said he was wrong.
I learned later that if someone were to threaten my child, break into my house, etc; it wouldn't be a problem for me to shoot them, because I'd be protecting someone else. Doesn't mean you have to have children to feel that way, but guess it does help. Your instinct to protect just kicks in sooner, I think.

Now that I'm old, I guess I'm a bit braver, and I realize that some don't give a hoot if you're weaker or older, in fact, it makes you more vulnerable to these losers.

In these cases tho; it's beyond me to how one could get to the frame of mind to kill another person intentionally. Walk away from them if need be, but don't take their life.
