Warm comfortable home, reading, watching tv and relaxing in quiet solitude without anyone around.

When my sons were in their teens, we had just lost my husband to cancer, I didn't want to spend the teen years bickering and fighting with them. So I began to ask them "What can you do about that?" or "How can you make this right?" It made me realize people need to vent and talk out their problems to hear it out loud. You give them the chance to think about the whole big picture, voice all their options, they can come up with a solution that fits their life. Not one that fits yours. Give that a try, it may help you.

That's great approach you took.. My advice is usually for my thirty five year old son and his girlfriend. It might be too late to correct past mistakes but I'm listening more to them now then speaking....so far, so good!
They love talking and confiding to me under those conditions! Who knew!
 
In 2014, when going through one of my mother's books, I found a paper in her handwriting. It said:
“The grand essentials of happiness are: something to do, something to love, and something to hope for.”
I thought she wrote it, but no, she copied it -> from goodreads

That's a nice quote, and even nicer since it's in her handwriting.
