This is for all of my Scottish friends, or anyone else, who (like me) has a love for the Highland Cow!

Pictures, comments....whatever!

The first thing you notice about Highland cows is their unique long hair.
They have a coarse outer coat which can be about 33cm long, as well as an inner coat which is shorter, softer and woollier
This double coat provides natural insulation from extreme cold, heavy rainfall, and powerful winds. It’s also economical for their owners as there’s less need for expensive shelters and barns. Many other breeds cannot withstand cold weather and snow, but Highland cows can live quite happily in these conditions. This makes them the first choice for herders in the Western Highlands, Alaska and Scandinavian countries.

I have to point out that.......In Canada, Holsteins, Jerseys, Gurnseys, are much more popular than Highland cattle, as milkers. Holsteins probably out number the Highland breed by ten to one, at least, here in Canada. Highland cattle are also outnumbered in Canada by Herefords, Black Angus, and Red Angus, as meat producers. I don't think I need to point out that winter in Canada is equally as cold as Scotland is. JimB.

The quote did not specify Canada as a country of choice.

For beauty, the prize goes to the Brown Swiss (IMO).

But Calif has a preference for Gurnseys when it comes to production, and Jerseys for protein richness.
