As a kid, my family would go crabbing on the Texas coast. Grew up, married a Midwest city boy, moved to the Gulf coast. Suggested to him one Sunday that we go crabbing. He had never heard of it. When I explained how it was done (chicken neck on a string), he thought I was leading him on a snipe hunt. He went along with it, though, and was shocked at how many we caught. The young kiddos loved it!
Later in life, I had a friend who was a charter boat captain (40 ft Hatteras, if memory serves). I was invited many times to go out fishing (again, Gulf of Mexico/America). Once, we were probably about 30 miles out. Something hit my line and it took 15-20 minutes to drag it in. The fun part of ocean fishing is you never know what's on the other end of the line. It was a shark, 4 ft long (weight unknown). When it hit the deck and was thrashing around, I ditched the line and quickly climbed up onto the flying bridge, leaving the men on the boat to hit it over the head with a bat.
When we made it back to the dock, it was cut up and we had a fish fry. Yum! That was the largest fish caught on that boat that summer.
Most fishing has been done in creeks/rivers/lakes, though. Trout and salmon. One year, my hubbie and I took a camping trip to Yellowstone, etc. We accidentally ended up in a campground on the Snake River. I was so excited. I started fishing and couldn't figure out why there wasn't a single bite. Asked him what were those lures we were using (I always used worms, grasshoppers, etc.). He said they were for...bass.
WHAT??? I didn't think bass were in that river, too high, too cold. I asked him, "We came all this way and all you brought were lures for BASS?" Yep. I was so angry, I tossed the rod into the back of the truck and said, "I'm done!" I was so angry, lol.
Now, there is a creek in my backyard from which I have over the years caught brown/speckled/rainbow trout. Been here two years now, have tried a few times with no luck. Now it may be too late in the summer for that.
