Has anyone ever had bad nose bleeds or had their nose packed?

I went through something last week that I think was akin to spending 5 days in a prisoner of war camp.

Never in my 73 years have I ever felt such intense pain and awfulness.

It started with a nose bleed...the first in my life .
It didn’t just drip out...it poured out, like you turned on the water faucet full blast. It poured out my nose, mouth, down my throat...twas icky
And resulted in 7 trips to the ER in a 24 hour period, before they admitted me to the hospital.

I had my nose packed 4 times before an ENT finally found the site of the bleed and cauterized it.

That was this past Wednesday. Today, 4 days later, I almost feel back to normal. I’m still weak and have a lot of sinus pressure, but think I might see the end of the tunnel.

I suffered from nose bleeds at one time (many moons ago); Mom took me to the doctor and he said it was due to the dry and hot weather. Never again. Strange.

Never been through that although I get some doozies from the dry weather and the heat indoors. I found out if I use any type of nasal steroid I tend to hemorrhage so I can't do that either. Did they say why this happened to you Kathleen?

As a child, I had several nosebleeds - when sneezing or sometimes just from scratching or blowing my nose.
When I was 16, I saw a doctor who said "You have a blood vessel right near your nostril. He cauterized it & no more bleeds."
While he was doing it, smoke started to fill the room & I could smell myself burning & I burst out laughing.
The doctor said, "What's so funny?" I said, "I never smelled roast nose before; got any barbecue sauce?"

They didn’t, but I have my own theory. I had a severe allergic attack to my second covid vaccine and my left nostril was, I don’t know, I guess “sensitive” is the right word, following that. It didn’t hurt, it didn’t bleed. It just felt tingly or something.

The week after the reaction, I had to have a covid test because I was going into hospital for cataract procedure. I asked them if they would take it from the right nostril because the other one was still kind of sensitive. They did...it didn’t hurt one iota, and I went on my merry way.

Two-weeks later I was having the second cataract procedure and had to have another covid test. Forgot to ask them to use the right nostril. They used the left, and oh my gosh the pain! It burned and hurt for a couple of hours afterwards, but then I was fine.

A week later, the bleed. I tried to tell the ER docs and ENT’s etc about this and it was 100%
poo-pahed and dismissed as not the reason, but it is the only one I can come up with. 🥴

I had nose bleeds from time I was a kid. We played football all the time and it was rough. I got hit in the nose and mouth so much that I had Nose Bleeds alot and bled like a stuck pig. It was not a big deal and never bothered me, but my shirts would be awful bloody...
Mom was used to it

I remember getting my nose Cauterized as kid - this would have been mid to latter 60's and the Doctor had a wire device that got glowing Red Hot and he burnt / cauterized the blood vessels in my nose. Even deadened - it hurt and the smell of burning flesh was not good. Made a huge scab for a long time.

I was always having Nose Bleeds - even as a young man. I went back to get my Nose cauterized again when I was in my latter 40's and it was done chemically and was not painful and unpleasant - like what it was when I was kid.

Since the last time being Cauterized about 15 years ago the Nose Bleeds have gone to not much at all. Guess it had to be with being younger ? I don't know....

I would also bleed heavily from busted lips.

I digress - oilpatch story follows....... One time while roughnecking, we were tripping pipe on night shift and I got hit in the face with the Spinning Chain pretty good. It hurt but we was tripping pipe and I could tell it had not knocked out any teeth - so kept working. In a few minutes I turned and the Driller saw me and got a look on his face and shutdown the Rig. My whole front was covered in blood and it had split my lip wide open from my nose. They sent me to a local town clinic. The Doctor a old man who had to get awakened out of bed to come and sew up another Roughneck. He was not a happy Camper..... This was in deep East Texas. He did not even deaden me, he just sewed up my lip - that was painful for sure !
Still have the scar 40 odd years later....

Yikes!!!! 😱

My cousin’s grandmother lived with us. At the time I thought she was old, probably was about 70. She’d never had a nosebleed and when it happened it sounds just like you described. A whole basin of blood, a trip to the hospital, etc. That’s all I recall other them something about it being so severe because it was the first time.

So glad that you feel you’re on the mend. And how are your new eyes?

Sorry to hear that Kathleen. Hope everything's OK now.

Never had a bad nose bleed but I did have my nose packed for two days after surgery for a benign tumor on my pituitary gland as they went in through my nose and sinus. I couldn't believe how much packing they'd stuffed up my nose when they pulled it all out.

Several busted noses
In the ring
In bars

Not sure what a 'bad' bleed is
But a break ain't all that fun

Gotta look at it ever time I look in the mirror

I think the last break put it back to almost normal

almost

I had a college room mate who was put on aspirin for a prolonged period of time. Being that it was a blood thinner, he got a nose bleed that wouldn't stop. Scary stuff!

The new eyes are wonderous💕. It’s a whole new beautiful world through my new lenses 🥰

My son decided at three years old, that a nose was a good place to stick a Tinker Toy. After that he spent a number of years in the ER due to nose bleeds that I could not stop. They cauterized it but he over the years he would get one or two with the change in the weather. Somewhere along the way, they stopped and I don't think he has had one now, at 51, for many years. They packed it and it was pretty bad for him. I really feel for you as I would hate to go through that myself.

When my son was little his nose would bleed a lot. As he grew up he had no problems with it. The other day we were sitting at the table and his nose started to bleed. He told me he was going back to childhood. He just turned 48.
