Has furniture become larger?

We have stared to look for a new lounge suite - 2 sofas and an armchair. The first thing I noticed in all all the stores and across all the brands, is that the furniture seems to have grown in size. The 2 seat sofas are the same size as our current 3 seat one, and the armchairs are about 50% larger. Most are reclining ones - fixed ones are rare. Annoyingly, many of the 3 seat sofas have only 2 cushions, so the person in the middle has to sit on the join!

Fortunately our lounge can accommodate the larger sizes, but I've seen places where the furniture dominates the room. We haven't finalised our choice yet and with a choice of three cover materials (we're going for leather), trim and about 20 colours, the suites are made to order with a 2 - 3 month lead time.

My wife and I have been looking for a new leather chair for my office and they are all very big. I asked the salesperson why are they all so large and the person son because people have gotten larger. I never gave that a thought. The chairs we looked at could probably sit close to two regular size people in it. I keep wondering if the salesperson is right.

I’ve noticed this as well. Seemed to have occurred at the same time clothes started to shrink. I personally blame Puttin. We’re to the point that when we replace our sofa, we’ll probably get two recliners, powered of course.

it's been like that for quite a long time. I have 2 leather sofas...had them for more than 10 years ... 1 is a 2 seater proper size,,, which we bought seperately and at a different time the other very large and very heavy modern... but they have as you describe the type of ''2 seat'' effect when in fact it seats 3 easily yet it only has 2 cushions... and also what we didn't realise when we bought it was that the cushions are fixed.. very annoying

Same as this...

The hospital that my Wife and I use here in Toronto has recently replaced all of the waiting room chairs with larger size ones that are about 50 precent wider than the previous ones were. Ambulance gurneys are now wider and rated for 400 pound patient loads. Barbers and hair dressers are buying bigger and wider customer chairs. So, yes the trend is to make larger furniture. Jimb.
