Have You Bought a Major Appliance Online?

First of all, let me get the fact out of the way that I'm in some ways old-school and not comfortable with certain things. That said, my range started beeping the dreaded F1 error yesterday so it's time for a new one. (Don't want to replace/repair the board.)

Anyhow, I'm not real comfy ordering a major appliance online but neither do I want to go store-to-store looking in person. I'm in a small town, so nothing even real close that carries things like that. I'd love to hear experiences of buying a major appliance online and if there's anything I need to be mindful of.
 

I have never purchased a major appliance online, but several of my friends have.
Two of them were 'pleased' with their purchase and delivery. The other complained
of too many dents in the delivery carton/box, and that it was not true to measurements
as described in the online store site...
 
Yes, I've ordered several times from Home Depot, with good results, they delivered and installed. You need to be sure to order a brand that repair men will work on, check for dents when delivered and double check your order. On second thought, they installed fridge, washer and dryer.....not anything that had to be electrically wired in.

I could easily do that, as it's not what I usually think of as an online experience. I wouldn't buy a refrigerator from most websites that won't even give you their location, which could be 2000 miles away or more, and what do you do if there's a problem when you get it? I have recently ordered online major items from Lowes, as I know who and what I am dealing with. I bought a shower stall, and a huge amount of countertop laminate this year. It was not scary at all. But I avoid places with names I've never heard of like "Dish Washers Are Us."
 
Personally, I wouldn’t. I’d at least go to the stores in your small town and check out the brands. The quality over the years has gone down. I want to feel the doors opening, the quality of the drawers, etc. If I found a brand that I like, I would order online to get the model I wanted. For me it‘s too much money to risk.

Home Depot is at the top of my list... do you remember if there was an option when ordering for them to pick up the old? I know it's like $50 which is fine... but I don't know if I'll be asked about that. @Nathan

I pretty much know that I want a GE so the quality will be good. The one that just bit the dust is GE and we were trying to remember when it was bought... came to the conclusion that it was about 18 years ago!

I thought of Lowes... but they want delivery fee *and* pickup fee. Home Depot is free delivery. But yeah, I'd not even consider an unknown place for anything, let alone an appliance. Thanks, Dave.

I'm glad you asked, I meant to include that even though HD does offer old appliance pickup for $50, the delivery guy hauled my old washer away for free.

Thank you, @LadyEmeraude . When it comes to dents and scratches, that would/could happen going store to store, too, because I'd just pick it out, and they'd still have to deliver, so those risks would still be there. I think I may go with it and try Home Depot.

I'm in the opposite situation. I like both of those stores, but Home Depot is a bit farther out of my reach (about 40 miles). I'm not even sure if they would deliver large appliances that far. I do buy small things from Home Depot that I am familiar with and aren't offered by Lowes. They are delivered by the usual carriers, and I can't remember if there is a nominal shipping fee or not.

To date I haven't bought anything online but I have checked out items and then gone to the store. There's a couple of reasons why I don't purchase through the internet. One I'm not smart enough, the questions just **** me off and second, I have to use a card. I much prefer cash, it's anonymous, you can't profile me or pester me with advertising.

People have said that with online purchases there always a proliferation of postal adverts, I wouldn't know but I am curious to ask if anyone who has bought online has then found letters and brochures coming through the mail.

All the time. Not so much hard mail. I don't remember any of that, but email comes raining down like plagues of locusts.

Now that I have mobility problems, I buy everything online. That includes my car, rolls of carpet, carpet tiles, all the furniture, fridges, freezers, ovens, lawnmowers, petrol strimmers, chain saws, TVs, laptops, iPads, mobile phones, goldfish,fishing tackle cement, wood, expensive stamps, Beds, watches, coats, shoes, trousers, paint, tools, wood, car parts, tyres, rock salt, plants etc the list is endless. The most remarkable was the two double beds complete, ordered in the afternoon and arrived here early next morning from Shrewsbury.
No, I get very little mail, except insurance offers on domestic appliances.
Then I come on here and mention Constable's paintings of Salisbury Cathedral and the next morning my laptop face page is just that, they know every move a person makes.
Just ordered a William Turner book, so perhaps tomorrow I will have the "Fighting Temeraire" whatever it was called or a picture of Petworth House.
