Have You Checked Your DNA?

I did the Ancestry test. I always said I was 100% Italian (born there and so were relatives and family), but it turned out that I am 85% middle to south Italy and 9% eastern European and some % Great Britain (?).

No.

The only reason that I would consider it is if it could help me understand links to hereditary diseases, longevity, etc...

I already know that I'm roughly 50% English, 25% German and 25% French. Finding out that I'm 1% Japanese or 2% Mongolian won't make much difference in where I go from here.

My sentiments exactly.

Scots, Welsh, English with a smidgen of Irish I'm comfortable with, but if I discovered I was 99% 'Dalek', then I'd be worried and I'd 'exterminate' myself.....:hatlaugh1:

I've done a lot of DNA testing as an amateur and occasional contract genealogist. Have found testing very useful.

As for the different testing companies, I've found ancestry.com the most useful due to the sheer volume of people tested. Ancestry has also created a new feature called Thru Lines that show 6 or so generations back based on matches and their family trees if you have a tree linked to your DNA test. Family trees at Ancestry.... now that's their great weakness; a lot of users start linking ancestors in their trees with absolutely no regard for accuracy. Looking individually at each ancestor and seeing if there's verifiable data attached such as censuses, wills etc is the only way to ensure accuracy. The other downside of Ancestry is that to actually build a tree using your DNA results, you have to be a paid member.

For surname/fatherline studies, I use y-DNA testing at familytreedna.com and always test for y67 or higher for accuracy.

A new test that I'm not that happy with, but still found a little bit useful since I'm of about 95+ percent British Isles descent is livingdna.com. It breaks down UK areas of origin, but that's about all. They've marketed a family networks matching feature for over the year that so far is junk.

I'm not going to do it. We had several people in the family who were serious geneaologists & shared the info. Not much info on one branch because they immigrated from an unpopular location in mid 1800's & very tight lipped due to prejudices ar that time.
Also there have been several stories in papers of people having "relatives" showing up unexpectedly due to supposed DNA matches.
Im still wondering what happened to the fingerprinting done of us kids during WWII so we could be identified if we were bombed.

"The real surprise is that she has 2% Russian. She's 83% Great Britain. The rest is Ireland and Scotland.".
For the sake of clarification, Scotland is part of Great Britain, but being twice Scottish can only be a good thing
:)

I don't want to sound like one of those conspiracy nuts. It used to be everything was a "commie plot". Now today it's the "Deep State" or Area 51. But I am concerned about that information being divulged to persons, whom I never approved. Like anybody with a buck. Maybe you're eager to find a brand new sibling, I'm not. I'm much more concerned about the misuse of my data than anything in the data.
Bah humbug!!!!

I have read that each DNA outfit has different info sources and they often disagree. I will save my money.

Me too. Besides, I know who my ancestors were.

There are a variety of these labs and some are better than others so you will need to investigte before spending money. Once you submit your DNA it goes in to a DNA bank and law enforecement can use it to hunt down bad people. Example: A person's relative is murdered. They use their DNA to lock in to all living relatives. Some of those relatives may know a suspect that threatened the victim years ago but never got reported. Without the DNA the authorities may not link one to the other. To date it has helped solve many crimes.

I learned my mon had a brother that died when he was two months old and I learned a lot about my mom's dad that I never knew. I also learned my mom's mom had been married twice. It is more than just who they were but also what they did.

I knew I was mostly Irish from genealogy, but mother swore we had American Indian blood. I had the test to prove her wrong. I was sure it was black blood. Sigh. American Indian,1%. Disappointing.

Here's my UK breakdown from LivingDNA, though it's been over 200 years since the most recent of my ancestors actually arrived in America. I've got documented paper trails pretty far back for most lines, and he's the newbie. :D When I use features that go over 500 years, Scandinavian areas light up which isn't surprising considering my UK areas are where Vikings invaded at various times. Some of the Normandy area shows that far back as well.

I’ve been tracing dads line. I’m back in the 1700’s to the original colonists and now I’m stuck. I think I’m going to have to hire someone. I have my line, then a gap, and then the line that the gap ties into. There are only four lines that it could be but I don’t want to claim someone else’s relatives. Lol.

That's the really hard time period. It gets so frustrating to get stuck there! I have one line that is verifiable back to Lincolnshire in the early 1500s, but mostly it seems that my ancestors dropped down to the colonies out of the clear blue sky instead of sailing over from Great Britain.
