I thought I was 50/50% German/ Hungarian until I checked:

Europe West 49%
Great Britain 14%
Europe East 13%
Italy/Greece 12%
Ireland 7%
Scandinavia 3%
Iberian Peninsula <1%

I always told my kids they were probably at least 1/4 Norweigan because their grandfather was 100% Norweigan. Turns out my daughter got her results back and is only 4% Norweigan. First time Mom has ever been wrong .

The real surprise is that she has 2% Russian. She's 83% Great Britain. The rest is Ireland and Scotland.

I was surprised at how much information on ancestral migration there was on a timeline. Lots of cousins but no surprise siblings or fathers of course.

She only paid $59 for the basic. Ancestry.com had a discount going on. I think it's usually $79

I dare not check my ancestors, because I know that one wore a 3 cornered hat, had a patch over one eye, had a wooden peg-leg and a parrot on his shoulder that wouldn't shut up.
Another used to play games with a pair of pistols by holding up stage coaches and having the passengers give him lots of money as gifts because they liked him.
I won't divulge what some of my lady ancestors got up to........:hatlaugh1:

No.

The only reason that I would consider it is if it could help me understand links to hereditary diseases, longevity, etc...

I already know that I'm roughly 50% English, 25% German and 25% French. Finding out that I'm 1% Japanese or 2% Mongolian won't make much difference in where I go from here.

If I had ancestors that were a part of the old west I would ba all over trying to trace them. I am reading "Wyatt Earp Frontier Marshall" by Stuart N. Lake and it is fascinating how rough and tough life was back then. Wyatt Earp has to be the bravest man in American history.

Yes. It is a requirement of the Commonwealth as a State Trooper. I never received a copy of the mix of my heritage.

Actually, most any bodily fluid can be used to test for DNA, including; blood, sweat, semen, ******l fluid and saliva.

I have not, but my niece and her mom did. They both knew they had lots of Italian, and my niece has Polish blood on my side. But they found a lot of interesting things, like .03% Asian, which, believe it or not, you can see a little in their eyes. Lots of others, but I do not remember what.
An interesting thing they learned, is you apparently get more of your DNA from your mom, which is why if they trying to find out someone;s DNA they check mitrocondial DNA. My niece explained why, but it was a while ago, and I do not remember exactly.

They both did the more expensive extended test, where you can finde relatives. My ex sis in law's came back that there was a 100% chance that my niece was her daughter.

Yes and I'm purebred, pedigreed mutt as most of us are. Roughly 50% Great Britain, 25% Scandinavian and 23% Irish with some minor bits and pieces western European.

.

My late sister was DAR [genealogy is important in DAR.]
She researched our family history the old-fashioned way.
For example, our ancestor who gave us our family name
came from Holland in the 1600s and died in New Amsterdam
[although the spelling of his name changed along the way.]

Europe East could be Hungarian.

Europe West and Great Britain both could be Germanic.

Britain is heavily Germanic... even the royal family is Germanic.
In 1918, King George V changed his German name to Windsor.

Here is an interesting fact to go along with your post. Mitochondrial DNA is only inherited from the mother. For example; even though I have inherited mitochondrial dna from my mother, I cannot pass it on to my kids. The reason being is that mitochondrial dna is contained only in the mother’s mitochondria, which is located in the egg that only she has produced.

My DNA was through ancestry and it didn't have many surprises: Great Britain 62%, Ireland 17%, West Europe 6%, Scandanavia 6%, East Europe 7% and Italy/Greece 2%. Probably the most interesting thing about getting my DNA checked is I am now n touch with my Great grandmothers sisters great granddaughter (which makes us cousins of some sort) and my maternal grandfather had been married before and had a son. I was matched up with his daughter. So we've been able to compare pictures, get names for photos that we didn't have before. I've debated trying the 23 and me to see about genetic health risks. Has anyone tried that one?

Hey, Ferocious. You know what they say about skeletons in the closet. If you can't do anything about them, best teach them to dance. George Bernard Shaw was credited with that quote. Looks like you're doing a good job with them anyway.

On the NBC Today Show, a year ago, they compared "23 and Me" with "Ancestry.com" and one other company. They used 3 twin sisters to test to see if the results were Identical. They were all exactly the same...with all 3 companies. So they all must be correct. I didn't know about the "genetic health risks". That's a valuable option!

No. The last thing I need is more relatives.

I will venture to say that some criminals out there must be mighty worried that their relatives are having DNA tested. Catching them this way has already begun and should continue.

don't know about that but the mail services require saliva only (thank God)

Not to be gross, but DNA can also be found in mucus, urine and feces, along with both pubic and facial hair, so long as the root is in tact. DNA has been the single biggest crime solver since the fingerprint examiner. The only exception to solving a crime using solely DNA is if there are identical twins or triplets in the family and one of them is the suspect.

96% Eastern Europe and 4% everywhere else. If my ancestors didn't leave Europe when they did I wouldn't be here today. My grandfather was denied citizenship because he lied about never being arrested. I'd love to find out what he did...he eventually obtained it a few years later.
