Have you ever been in a natural disaster?

The blizzard of 78, hurricanes, avoided a tornado by 2 streets, hail that broke through windows, the big ice storm that snapped off trees and lost power for 5 days.

As a child there was a huge flood through the river valley in our city. We lived on one of many of the hills, so we were safe, but many were not.
I remember the blizzard of 78. I got up & ready for school & went to the kitchen to find my Dad sitting at the table. I was surprised because he was off to work by 5 am. He said there was a blizzard going on & he was the only one to make it in to work. The boss told him to close it down & go home. He said it was bad going into town, but drivable. However, when he came home the only way he knew where the streets were was by watching the telephone poles on the side.

We had a lot of snow in our area, but other had it much worse than we did when they lost power & couldn't get out until the plows moved tons of snow.

1964 Hurricane Dora while living in Florida
1975 7.6 Earthquake centered under the Island I was stationed at in Alaska.
1992 7.3 Landers Earthquake in California
1994 6.7 Northridge Earthquake in California that finally made our house uninhabitable.
2010 The big Flood here in Nashville, two months after we moved here from Nebraska.

Learned to just roll with the punches and be prepared for anything...

Wow. It seems that I am blessed living in Australia,
Sure, we have devastating bushfires and some floods.
Cyclones as well. The worse one being Tracy which destroyed 80% of the city of Darwin on Christmas Day 1974.
66 people were killed that day.
A song was written about the disaster.

Maybe if a tornado qualifies for one. Last Summer about 10 of them ripped through my area. Knocked a lot of power lines down and we were without power for about a week.
I have always thought I would love to experience a cyclone. When one sees the damage done, the lives lost, I'm better off away from them.

On a sailboat somewhere in the coastal waters of former Yugoslavia when a Sirocco tore rig and sails. The coast is mostly razor sharp rock created by snails. Deadly. Albanian Navy got us into a harbor by means of tug and machine guns. They did let us go.

Had four hurricanes in Florida. One that did some damage blowing off part of the carport with strong winds and some minor flooding. Others that caused limbs falling off trees.

Earthquakes in California and Idaho, which knocked down pictures and shook the home. One earthquake in California sent the water up and out of the swimming pool. Some aftershocks that made the earth shift and furniture felt like it was tipping over.

You were very lucky from the sounds of it.

Wow, amazing experiences. Am I missing out, never experiencing Hurricanes or Earthquakes?

The equivalent of a Hurricane. Hurricanes have their genesis over warm water which is the only large ones we get here in Australia. Though we do have mini, very localised Tornados.
Thank you. Hurricans come with so much warning. You can prepare. People disregard that very often and then comes the great awakening.

We lived on the 16th floor when Andrew hit Washington, DC. A strange feeling when the building started swaying.

When Opal came into Georgia we were about 100 miles from home on my first bike trip with a 450 Vulcan SO had the 1500. Miss big and bad turned an offer to get home with a friend who had room for one bike on his truck. It was an interesting three hours on back roads Often I could barely me out SO's back light. Focus, focus, you cannot lose the red dot as sight is barely past the front fender. I got the stand down at home and that was it. SO had to get me off the bike, out of my clothes and into the hot tub.

SO was invited to volunter with a group flying rescue and then supplies after Kathrina. Our generator disappeared:>) For Ivan we had a hurricane party in Birmingham, AL. That ended in a new roof and then some but all in our circle were accounted for. Again SO was voluntered and it was a couple of very bad missions in the Pensacola area.

I was in the 1994 Quake in the San Fernando Valley (Los Angeles). Kids were young. First quake that genuinely scared me. Scared the daylights out of me.

My husband was driving a bagel delivery truck, nights, at the time and somehow managed to make it home with all the lights out to pull into the front yard and shine his lights into the living room. I had to pull half the living room and hallway (it felt like), away from the front door, while he pushed from the other side, to let him in.

I was holding our two year old with our eight year old standing next to me and as soon as he walked into the house, I handed him the baby and burst into tears.

Wow, that must have been scary. Especially not knowing if your husband was okay.
