Have you ever gotten super lost? What happened?

I don't know if it counts as "lost" because I knew where we were.....the problem is we weren't supposed to be there.

We were heading for the campground of a casino in Vicksburg (casino campgrounds tend to be nice and cheap on the assumption that you're going to lose lots of money at the casino) and I, the Navigator, got us turned into the casino parking lot instead of the campground driveway.

In trying to get out, we ended up in the dead end of a long row pulling a 38-foot fifth wheel. The Spousal Equivalent had to back the darned thing all the way back up the row (which ain't fun, not at all) while I got to stand behind and tell people who wanted to park that they'd have to back out to let US out. People were not pleased, let me tell you. Such an impatient bunch, gamblers. My ears were burning.

I've gotten—not exactly "lost," but...

When I was in college, during winter break at Christmas, I was going to stay at my boyfriend's parent's house in Maryland. Our friend Bart was going home to Pennsylvania for Christmas and offered to drop me off at my boyfriend's, which was more or less on the way. It was around dusk when we left school, and it should've taken us about four hours to reach his house. We were on the highway, chatting away, when we decided to stop at a gas station and hit the vending machines for some snacks. By then, it was dark. We got back on the highway, yakity-yaking non-stop. It wasn't until we'd driven forty miles that we realized we were driving in the wrong direction! 🥴

It was late by the time we got to my boyfriend, and he was frantic, thinking that something had happened to us. It ended well, but we felt really stupid for having made that mistake. If we'd been paying more attention instead of talking so much, it probably wouldn't have happened.

As a kid, roaming the mountains, yes, many times
Learned to go 'down' the mountain, follow streams
Ends up at a road

I no longer get lost in the woods

Town?
No matter how small
I can get turned around if there's only one crossroad......with a light

About 4 years back I got lost in the woods at night trailing a deer. It was overcast so there was no light at all and the wind drowned out any traffic noise. I had a lantern but I knew it would go out at some point. These were familiar woods right in back of our house that were formerly quite bare but had grown over with thick growth and became suddenly quite unfamiliar. I was almost ready to light a fire with my lighter and paper I had and wait till morning when I stumbled upon a trail I recognized. Since then, I carry a compass as this would have made it quite easy to find my way out. That same week, the father of a friend from church got lost in a similar manner and died of exposure!
