Have you ever "named" your vehicle?

Back in Chicagoland in the early/mid '60s, it was not unusual for a car's "name" to be painted on the front fender (behind the wheel). My first car was a red '54 Pontiac convertible with a straight "8" engine. It was appropriately called "The Red Roach".

The coolest car name in our area was a '55 black (primer) Olds 2 door with a tri-power motor. It was deemed "Gunslinger" in white cursive. The name likely came from Bo Diddley's song - "Bo Diddley's a Gun Slinger".

Haven't named any since then, but I have been tempted.......

I never thought about naming a car. I have heard others referring to their car as "the old clunker", or the "old rattle trap". I drive a 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport. Don't know what name I'd give that. The color is Mercury Gray.

The old vintage MG got dubbed 'Jessica." That name got me a sh*t shower of grief. At a classic car show some lady overheard that we have named the car Jessica. Curiosity got the better of her and she asked if there was a reason for that name.

I explained that like her cartoon namesake, she's a redhead, she has a great body and when I said: "And she's got a cracking pair of hooters," that brought the sexist vitriol down on my head.

Yikes, I forgot.... When it was time for a second car, my Uncle Frank gave us a '64 Ford wagon with the 390 cu in motor. It was grey, but looked more like primer than paint. We called it "The Grey Ghost". The motor was "loose" and it started up on the coldest mornings, and with just snow tires it went thru any drifts we happened to hit.

No, but I named an airplane one time. I flew a Boeing-747-400 to Honolulu on what was supposed to be its last flight before heading to the bone yard. It flew like it wasn't ready for recycling yet, until we started over the Pacific Ocean. That old crate shook, rattled and rolled all the way across the ocean. I have no reason why, except maybe the winds were tossing it around. I named it "Tina." Did you ever see Tina Turner perform and dance? If you did, you know what I'm talking about.

I once had a girlfreind named Milly Hillman, so I nicknamed my Hillman Minx, Milly The Minx, but then Milly and I fell out and Suzie soon came onto the scene so Milly became, Suzie, until Maggie came along.... arr, work it out for yourself. 😊

I had a plaque, made at Lane Tech, hanging from the rear bumper that read "Devil's Crown" on my '55 Crown Vic..

I took a year of foundry shop at Lane in '61. Some guys were making those license sized plaques of aluminum. As my first two cars were ragtops, I had no use for them. I recall an area club called the "Head - Aches" and their plaques had two OHV cylinder heads under the name. Pretty cool I thought!

I’ve never named my cars, but generically tend to refer to them as ā€œfellahā€ or ā€œguy,ā€ sometimes ā€œfriend.ā€ I tend to think of them as male. They just want a little respect, recognition, and appreciation, like most of us, I reckon… šŸ™‚

Just once…. Broke down shortly after that and I had to eventually sell it for scrap. So that’s the last time
