To ' grow' or maintain an orchid?

Tried.3 times...not

Yep and failed too. Also, have never been able to get an avocado plant going. Got a purple thumb I guess.

I have a black thumb. It's not dark green, it's black....just like the plants that I try to grow.

Plants have been known to commit suicide in the back of my car on the way home from the nursery. When I walk through the plant section of Home Depot, I can hear them whimpering.

I've killed a preserved fern. I've killed a plastic Christmas tree. Orchids don't have a chance with me.

Did you suspend it over a glass of water with toothpicks? It worked for me ages ago.

Babs2u , I have thought about this a lot since my mom could have a avocado seed with yards of vine all over the place. I have never been able to do so. The only difference I can think of , is being in Calif with a tree in nearly every yard we had, she used a seed that was natural and not been cold in storage. The trees were not genetically messed with back then either.
Do you think that could be a reason?

My late husband began a small orchard for us with a few different fruit trees and only the apple tree survived

There was a mango tree in the back yard when we bought this house. Six years later, it produced its first mango this year, which grew large but never ripened. It was rock hard when it came down. I have hopes for next year, but not great hopes.

Yes many times mostly failures, but we have a couple survivors that enjoy the light and consistent temps in the powder room. We finally got one to re-bloom this spring and this purple one I just noticed flowered recently.

I'm guessing most don't recognize or know what lighting conditions that orchids require, and no matter what that can't be overcome. We just bought enough of them and tried them out in different spots in our home.
