Have you ever wondered about some of our elected officials?

I’m all for term limits. Our founding fathers never expected to see career politicians. The idea was to serve one or two terms and then to go back and work on your farm. That would seem more patriotic than being a career politician and living off the backs of the American workforce.

We have term limits only on the President and Vice President, so why not extend it to the senate and house? I was taught that the reason the President’s term was set was done primarily so that the same person couldn’t win and win and win and win forever and then we take a chance of that person becoming a King.

I have never seen a person elected to a federal senate or house representative and retire broke. Most count of it with millions.
 
I try NOT to think about them because I feel they are all corrupt and making millions from the American taxpayer.

When the Constitution was ratified way back in 1787, several leading statesmen said the lack of term limits was a dangerous defect, especially for presidents and senators. Presidents weren't given term limits until the early 1950s.

I think it was Jefferson who said "Nothing is more essential to the preservation of a Republic than a periodic rotation."

I've often wondered what sort of person decides at an early age that they want to pursue a career in politics. I can't see the appeal, especially for an inherently honest, civic minded person. Certainly nothing I'd have ever considered for a minute.

The alternative to career politicians is, I suppose, amateur politicians. These would very likely come from the ranks of the rich. Or the famous. We've had a few of these through the years but more often than not our elected leaders have come up through the ranks beginning often as attorneys, then judges, state legislators, governors, &c.

When I go to the polls I rather like to having candidates with some verifiable track record in governing that I can look at.

These people are a sample from society, so crazies are going to get through.

It's amazing how disengaged we are with the political system and it's representatives. We know next to nothing about them, hardly ever follow up to check what they're doing, and seem willing to excuse some heinous stuff if they happen to agree on a purely party basis. We rarely hold them to account, never seem to worry about how they vote on bills etc.
 
I do think about how long they stay in. While many people hope and want to retire. They are "working" into advanced age. So what is it? Power? Ego? The privilege? I doubt it's because they want to give of themselves for the best for the people.

I've lost faith in elected officials. All of them.
