Have you found any real advantages to joining AARP?

I have received ads from them for years and never felt the desire or need to join. I know they have some discounts but wonder is it really worth joining?

Hartford auto insurance made me join AARP.
Other than that, no, not really.
oh, Every month they send a flyer/magazine with a picture of a celeb that just turned 50.
hahahaha!
LOL trying to make you feel you are in 'good' company :D

I didn't care for AARPs political leanings, so I went with AMAC (Association of Mature American Citizens). Always good to have choices I say :). Don...
TY Macfan..I guess I missed them..or they missed me..are there advantages to joining them?

Their offerings are on par with AARPs but their values, beliefs and platform is a lot more in line with mine. Compare the two as your mileage may vary. Don...
will do... Thank you...I lived in Cal for 30 years.. Moved to Fl and I miss the mountains:confused:

It's hard to talk about AARP, and The Hartford without the other. AARP was always a marketing arm for its insurance. Yes, some little old school teacher came up with the idea, but she sold the rights to The Hartford to get start up funds for the association. It was a wholly owned subsidiary for decades. They've had problems over the years as to whether it was a charitable organization, or an insurance vehicle., marketing seniors. Its "charity" work is rather anemic., nor is it any real political authority for retirees.

Nobody in DC thinks they represent anything other than The Hartford. It has giving up the façade of the " American Association of Retired People", it's now just legally "AARP", 4 letters , which signify nothing. It's supposedly a "do gooder bunch" that wants to sell you insurance. You can get the same discounts by joining AAA, or other such groups, and you won't have to have a million insurance pamphlets in your mail box.

And today, you can get most of the "discounts" on line by not clicking on the first price you see. Travel sites get you the same "discounts".

The only good thing I got out of being an member{which I no longer am} was Walgreens
I was a member on the website for 5 yrs,the adminstators never bothered to tell us, until after the fact they changed the format a couple times .It upset many long time posters who left in droves

We joined, but don't use any of the benefits offered. I support the organization (generally) as far as their advocating for seniors, so will probably continue membership. How much 'advocating' is questionable, however (see fuzzybuddy comment).

I'm an AARP member, but hardly an enthusiastic one. Membership is relatively cheap if you don't donate to their scholarship or other funds. The benefits of membership are minimal, although they may give you "gifts" for joining or renewing like small flashlights or cheap zippered travel cases. Some motels or restaurants may give you small discounts if you patronize them and produce an AARP card. Their oversized magazines and ads pile up quickly. It's all nothing to write home about... 😴

Until Covid one grocery store used to give away that magazine. That’s in Canada. I saw George but never bothered to pick up that issue.

CAA/AAA gives the same discounts for restaurants, hotels, etc. There’s always some way to get them.
