Have you gone cashless?

Have you gone completely debit yet?
I have. Today, its just as fast and easy as using cash. Plus you don't get a pile of change. Around here, if you don't have an account, the banks won't take coins.

Almost. Since about last November, when I quit going out for lunch (mostly at fast food places). I'd use cash there. Now only when it's just a little amount do I use cash.

There is a small family owned feed store I go to. Sometimes I'll pay cash there because I think the stores are charged a fee every time someone uses a credit card. Don't have a debit card.

Nope, I'm very fond of cash!

I'm constantly amazed by how little cash people carry and keep on hand at home.

Most of the time. There are a couple of small stores that don't take a credit cards and charge a fee if you do, so I use cash for them. Gas is a little cheaper with cash also. If I go out to dinner I like to leave the tip on the table rather than add it to the bill. That way I'm sure the waitress we had will get it. At least I hope she does.

Me neither. I still use cash. I use it for yard sales and estate sales in the summer and autumn. When it comes to change I bring it to Coinstar at the grocery store and they spit out a check which the courtesy booth lady transfers into more cash. I find cash a lot too. Not just change but bills. Money is money. Cash is fine with me. I'd miss it if there were no more of it. :(

For the most part, yes. I do most of my business with a debit card. I try to carry a small amount of cash, I prefer to do a cash tip for service people, just to assure they actually get it, and to give at church. And sometimes just to have. Hate using the card just to buy a dollar cheeseburger at the rare times I crave one. LOL

I don't use cash very much at all. I rarely have more than $30.00 in my purse; usually far less.

It makes me nervous to carry a lot of cash if my purse were lost or stolen. It's only one call to the bank to freeze my account if that happens. Cash, on the other hand, is totally gone.

Plus, I like having the bank keep records of my spending instead of me. It's the least they could do for using my money, practically for free!

I will not use a debit card. Too easy for someone to see your pin. I keep a little cash at all times around $100.00 for tips, etc. Otherwise I use a credit card with cash back rewards. Kroger sends me a check every few months depending on how much I spend. Pay the 2 cards I use off each month. Have the electric bill charged to card and I monitor both of them online to be sure they are correct. Also use Ebates when shopping online and that generates a few dollars every now and then.

Terry, come to think of it now, I used to use a credit card for everything and paid it off each month-unless there was a special purchase- and used to get a small credit. I don't know why I stopped doing that!! hmmm.

I'm not cashless yet, still carry some cash on me for certain things. Still use checks for groceries and stuff. Have several credit cards that I use for gas or online purchases, or for stores that don't readily accept checks anymore. No debit cards and don't intend to get any.

I use my debit card most of the time for purchases, but pay my bills with checks. I do have a tin full of cash though. My "emergency stash."

I carry very little cash. I use my debit card most of the time for small purchases (fast food places, grocery store, etc.). Larger purchases go on a credit card. Also use a credit card for online purchases so I can dispute a charge if need be.

I use almost no cash at all and pay all my bills online. I use my debit card for store purchases. My debit card is also a credit card and my bank protects me against unauthorized purchases and I keep close watch on my account online. I might have a few checks around here somewhere, but I'd be hard pressed to find them.

Not quite. Some of the smaller local shops have not yet gone "Contactless", and the likes of the cleaner and gardener still need cash, so one still needs to carry a small amount of cash, but I haven't used cash in any sort of commercial premises for at least two weeks. and it's well over a month since I had to draw cash from an ATM.

I have not gone cashless. I like to have some cash in my wallet and always pay cash
for small items. I pay cash when I get gas in the car, buy a couple of greeting cards, stamps
or a snack and coffee at a fast food place. I always pay my hair stylist in cash.

I have seen people who use their debit card for a bag of chips and a chocolate bar. Apparently they
do not have five dollars in their pocket. I would feel anxious if I had no money in my purse.
I use my credit card to pay for larger items and pay it off every month.

I carry some cash with me because sometimes you need it. I use credit cards that I pay off each month and get some cashback with. I have an ATM card for bank transactions that is not a debit card. I had to insist on getting an ATM card that was not a debit card; they didn't want to do it and insisted it couldn't be done... but it could and they did. I see no reason to have a debit card when I have credit cards that have more available credit than I can vision that I would ever need. You have better protection with a credit card than a debit card because with any funny transactions your money is gone and you have to try and get it back with a debit card... with a credit card you get a bill that you dispute and you still have access to the money in your checking account while that is going on.

Almost all debit cards nowdays treat "funny" transactions the same way credit cards do. I can challenge a debit charge and go thru the same type of thing I would with, say, American Express.

I am totally cashless .... have been for some years now. I don't have a debit card either, and I don't write checks anymore..
Have streamlined down to two credit cards to get me thru my monthly activities/bills just fine, and the bank pays my monthly bills.
I don't miss handling money at all.
I do have a piggybank though .. grandkids think I need that for "emergencies" .. they like to find change on the street and in parking lots and bring it to me for the bank. I guess they are looking after me. :)

One thing about being part of a cashless society ... when the "great fall" comes, all that plastic and all those bank accounts will be useless.

... just wanted to add some sunshine to your day ...

Surprised that totally cashless seems so common in the US.

How do you manage if buying a newspaper from a newstand, or at a bridge tool or similar? Do you ignore atreet charity collectors, or rhe church collection plate? Do they all have contactless card facilities?

I'm with Aunt Bea and chic. I'm old fashioned and pay for everything with cash, a check or, for utilities, electronic transfer. I don't have either a credit or debit card and I can tell you it's getting tougher to function financially without "plastic". If you want to rent a car, reserve a hotel room or buy insurance, the first thing they do is ask for a credit card or run a credit check. Fortunately, I live such a simple life, I seldom have a problem, and most of my payment methods are established with business that I've dealt with for years. The only time I got in a bind is when I took an overnight car trip 5 years ago and tried to get accommodations. The hotel finally relented and accepted cash - they definitely would not take a check. It's a far cry from when we went on vacation in the 1960s and my dad would just pull into a motel and pay cash for a room.

Maybe his makes me less a target of identity theft.
