Have you moved house much in your life?

I haven't. Just from parents to with my husband. Then we moved just once when our family needed a bigger house with bedrooms each. Since then we are settled happily. Maybe if we get very infirm we might downsize. Also, i live within 10 miles of where I grew up. I truly do love being settled.

A friend recently told me he has moved more than 20 times in his life. He never feels settled anywhere.

I've only moved from my parents house to where my husband & I live now. This was his second move. I've had friends who grew up military & moved many times. My brothers only moved twice after leaving our parents house.

I've lost track how many times my one SIL has moved. Two weeks ago she unexpectedly announced she's moving again to an apartment Oct. 1st because she didn't like the one neighbor or house we got for her. This time she is on her own as I called movers to do it for her.

The most times I've heard any one move was the people we bought her house from. They've been married for 55 years & have moved 50 times. They had lived within one county the entire time with only two exceptions in the neighboring county. I asked why, she said they get bored & like a change of pace. I asked how they picked this house they were selling & she said they had never lived in this area & wanted to try it. Now they moved into a trailer. Not sure what size, but hopefully it's one that can be towed with their belongings inside. I think their true modern nomads.

At least as many times as I can count on my fingers and toes. Moved Province to Province, as a child. Then, apartment to apartment, city to city. The last decade, I've been at my current abode.

Not if you think 3 times is a lot. When I was a babe, my parents lived in a flat in a house my paternal grandparents owned. When I was 4, the grandparents moved out and we moved into the main part of the same house, then my dad rented the two smaller upstairs apartments. In 1975, a Victorian house came on thr market and my parents bought that. From then to 2021, I lived in that house until I bought my current residence.

As far as rentals went on, some were temporary after house fire. That came to 11 times. Various reasons: rent increase, bad neighbourhood (only once thankfully). After father died, Mother couldn't settle anywhere other than a year, then we'd be there for 9 months, give 3 months notice and we'd be packing again. Urgh! I had enough...

I decided to get my own place, got a short lease agreement, paid first and last month. However, met future husband. We found our first home and he signed the lease. I was able to cancel mine, no problems.

So, from the time we got together (loads of travelling involved for our new working life, contracts. That was another 10. Things got slower and more settled for us. It's now just 7. Daughter and I are staying put. We've had enough of moving/packing/ unpacking. New curtains, old curtains... it was too much.

We'd all made a vow that this seventh one was it. Very happy if it as well. It's lovely and in past 15 months, finally completed. Yippee 😀😀😀

How's that house looking now Deb, do you pass it often ?

18 times.
As a child, twice.
After 18 I lived in 6 different apartments.
After I got married I moved 10 times.
I've been in my current house the longest...12 years, and they will have to carry my cold dead body out of here. (Sorry for the graphic description)

Yes, I pass it regularly when I have to go shopping or deliver meals-on-wheels. The lawn is mowed. Too bad they got rid of the bridal veil bushes out front along the porch. They have some short plants there now. I have an old photo of the front, but those bushes didn't usually look so overgrown. I tried to keep them trimmed to the height of the porch railing.

Oh, man, yes. A lot.

I relate to your friend. I've never felt settled until very recently. And even now I waffle sometimes.

While my kids were growing up, I moved around chasing better jobs and the kind of hours I wanted, hours that allowed me to be home with them as much as possible (I was a single dad).

It wasn't until they were teens that I wondered if having to change schools and leave BFFs was hard for them, and I asked. My sons were sad to leave some friends, but they really liked making new ones. They liked some schools better than others, but didn't mind the change.

My daughter, on the other hand, was mad at me for a long, llllong time. Or at least her teenage years seemed like a very, very, very long time.

And I don't know if all teenage girls are like that - all emo and brooding and stink-eyed and stuff, All The Time - but ho-oly cow!

I was spent by the time she hit 20. I feel lucky I survived it. (she's doing quite well, btw)

it looks nice now, but it's sterile isn't it ?

Well, once I sold it to the people that revovated it, I couldn't dictate what they could or couldn't do to it. That's what most people want these days, though. However, I feel they destroyed the "Victorian" look of the interior. I did post some before & after photos somewhere on this site.
But they obviously love the Victorian look of the exterior. Removed the shrubbery so everyone could see it.

Looks pretty.

yes I remember seeing them, they did a very good job of the inside considering we thought it might have to be demolished. Wonder if they've done anything with the basement yet
