I was married for twenty years and the relationship with the in-laws was cordial but a bit strained. Their family had lots of drama and I had no tolerance for that crap, and had to always protect my boundaries.

Funny thing is after I divorced their daughter the in-laws acted like we were best friends, calling and texting me which had never happened before. I think they were so shocked and ashamed by their daughters behavior that they realized I wasn't such a bad guy.

I was blessed to have a very sweet MIL and FIL; we were cordial even after my ex left. My FIL passed away before the divorce was finalized, but my MIL and I continued to correspond and exchange gifts until sadly, she too passed. But they were great, very kind people.
