Have you repurposed anything lately?

Since I am repainting my kitchen cabinets I thought I'd like a new utensil holder. I've had the old one for years and it is chipped. I went to several stores and decided on anew holder (800x600).jpgflower pot (800x600).jpg black wire one. It was strong, and made of heavy metal. Nicely made I thought, that is until I put the utensils in. All the handles poke through the wire openings. When you pull one out, they all come out or fall on the cabinet top. Back to the store it went. I was puttering around my basement and found a flower pot that was left by former owners to my daughters home when she lived in Oregon. She didn't want it so in the trunk it went. I thought, what a perfect utensil holder and one with memories of a great trip across country. I washed it up and you can see the results. What do you think? Anyone else re purpose something?

I like that Ruth, much more attractive than the black one. I have no real counter space at all for things like that, just the basics, microwave, coffee pot, toaster and a few small other things fit. All my utensils are shoved into the drawers most big one are in like another kitchen 'junk' drawer. Love your counter, backing, etc. Can't think of anything I repurposed right now.

Very nice. This is what I do too. My utensil holder is a large milk glass hob nail bucket without a lid. I think it was part of a canister set as I have seen other pieces in different sizes in the thrift store and antique mall. Some store in this town must have sold them at one time. It's heavy and makes a great utensil holder. Found it at out PAWS thrift. Also I have a green depression glass cookie jar with no lid found for a few dollars in a thrift store. I keep lighter items in that.

Nice sugar jars with no lids also make good pen holders.

RuthnJersey, Liked the black wire container but the coloring on the planter really goes well with your counter and backsplash and adds a nice pop of color. If you ever run into a wire container like that again you can always glue a liner inside (plastic table mat, flexible cutting mats, copper or aluminum flashings) so "things" don't poke through the wire.

If I were ever to become a "hoarder", I'd be a plastic-container hoarder. I have a hard time giving up good plastic jars, tubs, etc. I DO discard most of them, but it's hard....oh, it's hard.

Does reusing the plastic containers that cottage cheese, Cool Whip, sherbet etc. come in count ?.....if so we've been repurposing for years.

I refer to the containers as free 'hillbilly Tupperware'. :)

Jeff Foxworthy, the comedian, says "If you have a set of matching salad bowls and they all say Coolwhip on them, you just might be a Redneck!"

Of course, when I was a kid, all the glasses in our cabinet had held jelly at one time and the juice glasses had come with dried beef in them. Our parents recycled before becycling was hip.

Yes,jujube,I save the plastic containers as well, and don't get me started on jars. Nothing like a nice glass jar with the really good screw on lid. Not the kind that go around once and leak if you turn them over. The good ones screw all the way down. Kind of hard to come by,but when I do, I soak those labels off for hours and guard them with my life. I actually have a couple my mom had. Once in awhile the hubby will ask me for one to store his nuts and bolts. I usually hand him a cool whip container. Giving him a jar is above and beyond the call of duty.

I grew up in the same house, it's a wonder we didn't bump into each other, LOL!!!

I have to argue with myself over tossing all of the nice little boxes, jars, plastic containers, bubble wrap, packing peanuts and odd dishes that find their way into my kitchen. I still save a few but I've established limits on how much of any one item I allow myself to keep on hand, silly first world problem!!!

Ruth ~ I like your recycled utensil holder. I use a vase from the thrift store to hold my utensils.

Radish Rose ~ I love the photo you posted. That guy is really into recycling!

When I was a kid my mom saved all the jelly jars for glasses. In fact, they were made to be reused because they had pictures on them.

I repurpose pasta sauce and large pickle jars to store my dried beans and grains. Also small jam and mustard jars for spices.

I break down cardboard boxes and use them to cover the mud in the dog's fenced area. We cannot recycle paper or cardboard here, but at least those boxes have another use before I dispose of them.

Oh yes! I got a whole cupboard full of those. They come in handy for all sorts of things. I once used a Koolwhip lid for a medallion around a ceiling light fixture.

Built a heavy duty wooden goat feeder when we first got our goats. They outgrew it. :( I used the frame for that and an old wooden shelf as a temporary stand for my keyboard. The ones you buy aren't sturdy enough and wobble. No wobble on this thing. ;)

I just made a new base for my favorite deep, plushy recliner. Several days ago I noticed my recliner was difficult to swivel so I turned it over and saw that the steel swivel base was cracked in two places and sagging badly. I found an old table top that I had been saving in my little shop and made a new base for the swivel mechanism. It's all back together now and I have my favorite recliner back.
