Have you used a Uber?

I live out in the sticks. So, we don't have Uber.
Have any of you been "Uberized"?

No never used an Uber and I can't remember the last time I even used a taxi, it was that long ago. I don't have a smartphone with apps or anything, so I don't know if I even could use an Uber. If I needed a ride these days, I'd just call a local cab.

I'm not sure what gave me this idea, but I thought Uber was less expensive than a taxi. Is that true?
 

I remember that Lon has used Uber and was very pleased with it. When I stop driving, I will use it as it is supposed to be cheaper than a taxi.
 
The last time I rode a taxi was in 1990 in Mexico. I understand that you need a smart phone to summon Uber. I don't have a smart phone so that is not an option.
 
I've used uber. It's been slightly cheaper than a taxi. Cars have been clean and quite nice. The big advantage is that uber is super-FAST. Usually 5 min or less. Taxi....might be 10 min, might be 40 min....whatever. And sometimes taxis smell. Uber is via smart phone app and credit card.

I haven't taken uber to/from airport but a friend has. She loved not having to park at airport for weekend, and she said the pick up/drop off at airport was extremely organized.
 
I still drive but I hear so much about it. I live in a rural area in New Jersey and I'm not sure if it is available out here. If for some reason the hubby or myself couldn't drive any more I would be willing to give it a try. I wonder if you can use a landline to have them come? I only have my Tracfone no apps on that.
 
We only have two Uber drivers in our county. One is way on the other end of the county and the one on this side is my daughter. Not to happy about it-we had a taxi driver murdered here several years ago,the driver and his cab just seemed to disappear of the face of the earth. He and his cab were found at the bottom of our lake many months later. Soooo,we are nervous about her doing this job,but she pretty much just drives days,does a lot of doctor appointment transports and the clinics are starting to recommend her. I haven`t talked to her much about her pay but we do have a couple of cab companies in town who will take you anywhere in town for $10 so Uber isn`t that great of a bargain.
 
Like I said, I live way out in the sticks. The nearest Uber guy is about an hour away. I never thought about needing a smart phone. I have an ancient flip phone from Consumer's. On my phone 4,5,9 is IV, V, IX.
But I wonder if you have a lot of very angry taxi drivers?
 
I still drive on a daily basis. Maybe the day will come when I can't, and then I'll have to call on my flock of kids and grandkids to help me out. And please, no "I can't burden the kids" story. I've been taking grandkids to school and picking them up for the past twenty five years, when we're not away from home. It's not been a "burden" for me and the few times that we need help, I don't feel a bit guilty to ask.

Maybe if I'd moved away when we retired and never been here to help out, I'd see it differently but that's not the case in our situation.

i've never used Uber. They are putting our cabs out of business here. That's what happens when new things people like evolve. I may try it one day.

​How? As I said, my son os an Uber driver and a licensed cab driver. His Uber work helps him stay in business.

My son and I used Lyft twice when we were in Boston. Both drivers picked us up quickly and their rates were cheaper than a cabdrivers rates. One parked at the exit to a concert waiting for people like us. They followed a preset route and their cars were immaculate. I tipped both of them even though I didn't have to. I'd use Lyft again.
 
My kids and grandkids use Uber a lot. I think it's more of a young people's thing. I did sign up with Uber, so they have my name if I ever need them, but the need hasn't come up yet.
 
Friends of mine attend the symphony downtown then stop somewhere for drinks, and they use Uber ....no parking hassles and no worries about a DUI...just in case. They also said their daughter uses Uber to & from airport so they don't have to pick her up, and it works out great.
 
I don't know anything about Uber. What is the appeal for calling some guy to give you a ride? Yeah, could be cheaper. But ,just because the guy looks like his pic, doesn't mean his last 5 fares are still breathing. I don't know. How does one 'vet' some guy on the phone? And you have to admit Uber is killing cab companies.
 
The appeal of Uber is that it's FAST. Usually arrives in 5 min or less. Taxicabs take a lot longer. The cars are clean - cabs sometimes smell of BO and other things. Customer gets a pic and license plate number. Vetting....well, Uber is a corporation. How would you vet a taxi driver or a bus driver? :shrug:
 
My kids use Uber sometimes and when I've been on vacation with them, Ive used it. I prefer it to a taxi. I have the app but have never called one myself....would if I needed one for some reason.

My grandson at College uses it a lot now and friends will share uber rides when coming home from a party. In fact, I'll probably get him an Uber Gift card for Christmas. :)

Although I don't approve of him drinking, it's pretty common at most Universities and I'd rather he Uber than drive.
 
From what I've been reading in the papers and seeing on the news, it seems that our elected representatives are guilty of a lot more criminal behavior than the Uber drivers. How many Uber passengers have been murdered or sexually assaulted?

Of course, we do have to be careful, in all aspects of our lives. Once I called a guy who was advertising in our local paper that he fixes computers. He sounded so creepy on the phone that I said, "Never mind, changed my mind," and hung up. I realized that I have to be very careful about letting anyone in my house to repair anything, and since then have never responded to ads in the classified section. It has to be a regular, recognizable company.
