Have You Used It In 6 Months?

Yeah, I need to clean out the garage. There's a pile of electronics out there that needs to be recycled and a bag of documents that needs to be shredded, and boxes of who-knows-what stacked along the wall. And in the back, there are all sorts of wood scraps left over from various projects.

Other than that, we don't have much clutter. I'm not one to hold onto things for sentimental purposes.

I do need to build more shelves in the garage so stuff doesn't wind up just being scattered around wherever there's an open space.

But there's still nearly a month to go before spring!

I don't keep useless junk / clutter, but there are some things I haven't used in over a year that will stay - like nice chinaware for special dinners, suits that still look up to date, house paint for touch ups to home exterior (2 yrs old, but contractor said it's good for up to 5 years) handsaws, shovel, an 8' extension ladder, and there must be more I can't think of immediately. Otherwise, I get the message.

What have you cleaned out this weekend?
As I said, spring cleaning season is coming.
It's important to plan.

The house itself is good,
I've got my Feng Schui goin' on.

The basement needs attention,
but my primary goal is the garage.

A Harley I haven't ridden in years,
I guess I needed to come to terms
that those days are behind me.
Selling that will really get things moving along.

Yep, the garage is my focus.

There are things that I hadn't used in more than a decade, including clothing. Now they are coming in handy and I'm so glad I saved them. Similar items would cost more and the quality probably wouldn't be as good. But I am slowly purging. I've already given away some things I wasn't using (one I wish I'd kept) and I've thrown some things away. Soon I'm going to be gathering up clothing to donate because I've just got too many garments.

As you know you will not have any problems selling a Harley .

I am excellent at dejunking! Hoping when my DH sees, he would come on board, but not yet. But I can't stand to be packed to the gills anymore. I need white space and I don't do clutter. But there are some items of mine I wish I could get rid of because I don't want to care for them anymore, but can't come to that peace yet. You don't realize it, but there comes a time when you realize you're not that same person you were when you bought it umpteem years ago, don't have the same interests, or I'm too old to want to deal with it. I say let it go to make room for your next chapter!

I’m in no rush to toss stuff but this past Saturday I came across my ‘as seen on TV’ Suzanne Somers Thigh Master exercise gadget down in the basement and put it out on the curb thinking a passerby would take the contraption away. Like brand new, only used once. Nope.

We did our major decluttering when we moved here , which was 4 years ago. We made four piles of stuff. The ‘throw away’ pile, the ‘give away’ pile , the ‘sell it’ pile and the ‘keep it’ pile.

We actually rented a dumpster and filled it up with stuff we didn’t want any more and we had bags and boxes full of stuff we gave away. Once we got started it was easy to do.

We basically had a bedroom full of stuff we no longer needed.

So many items to rid this house of old items and clutter. I can get rid of so many items in the kitchen I no longer use or give some useful things to others. I just need help to declutter all rooms of old items. I am elderly and husband disabled so I really need help in this effort. Most of the items are no longer of use to us.

I have no family living here as all have moved away, so only have friends or neighbors to ask but don't want to impose. Last resort hire people to help.

Take it one step at a time. Empty one drawer - trash, someone else, keep. Take the trash out. Decide who will be the someone else. Next day. Next drawer. Nibble on it and it will not be so overwhelming.

Good advice but tough for me as I like to be prepared. If something has “hardware” value I will keep it. For example, some rubber washer might come in handy so it goes into the drawer labeled “Assorted Washers”. Or a handle from a broken broom or shovel will be saved and eventually get used, even years later.

But for sure if I have not used something for years and it has no potential value it gets tossed. I am getting better at this.

Michael, there is a difference between Harry Homeowner's Neighborhood Hardware Store and Tool Rental and stuff:)

@ Two Step, excellent advice, I started today with one cabinet and I think it will be easier, one at a time each day, if I can. Thank you.
