Hay from Iowa.

Hello folks, new here..

I'll be retiring in 5-7 years and I'm worried, unsure and anxious about many things. I figured I better start reading and asking questions because I greatly value advice from people with more experience. I'm still living in the same four bedroom house my wife and I raised our kids in, wondering why I'm still here alone, filled with stuff I don't need and have lost interest in..

Anyway, thanks for having me.

I understand that .... lived in that situation too.
I had to sell the house and find a new way of life when I got to that point.

Welcome Mike!

@palides2021, He sounds like he doesn't need a lot of care and feeding! He seems pretty self-actualized! Don't ya think?
I'm sorry for not spending more time on this forum, but I've been super busy and just finished a twelve day work week. I work as a maintenance man (jack of all trades, master of none) at the U of I dorms and was on call last week and worked 32 hours of OT! Actually HVAC is my expertise, but the U of I auctioned my job off at the chiller plant to the highest bidder Engie three years ago, but I declined their job offer and ended up at housing and dining. Ive never worked this hard in my life, or been so frustrated with management, clogged drains, vandalism, entitled attitudes and the lack of communication with the other departments we work with. We still use paper records, and work requests could show up as emails, work requests on our ancient clunky TMA software, word of mouth or honeydo lists. Usually multiple requests for the same work request so what a sh!t show! Anyway, what a way to end your accumulation period and I practice my quittin speech daily. On top of that, I'm trying to maintain a 4 bedroom house and everything under it's roof, which was doable when I was married, but it feels like I'm losing the battle.

Again, I'm sorry and don't like whining, but I haven't been in a good place lately even though Ive been told financially I could retire today. Why do I keep working a job I dont enjoy or need? Because its pretty good money😂 because when I transferred, I was promised the same wage, which is substantially more than my coworkers make. The prospect of retiring almost feels like I'm quitting or giving up and that's not me.

As a former resident of the corn growing state, welcome. I'll never go back though, that snowfall (1997) of 36" was enough for me! (I was 2 miles below Riverside, IA. Worked at Kalona Plastics)

Hey former neighbor! I hear ya.. I used to like snow when I was younger, but now it means snow removal from my corner lot each time. One time the city was on me when the rain turned to snow while I was at work and I has a 2" think layer of Ice everywhere I had to chip away. Ordinance says I have twenty four hours, so I was out there most of the evening chipping and then a day later it warmed up enough where I could have shoveled it.

Where did you end up moving to? Sometimes I question if I should remain in Iowa and break ground on my second property close to millersburg.. I always wanted a corn field view and made a offer before I even set foot inside the beater mobile home that replaced the 1800's farm house that was there. Here's the view.

if you start now you can slowly but surely add to it in the next several years and then your place will look like mine, not a hoarder, but a packrat with multiples of everything-- several.

Ive been adding for the last 20 some years. Definitly not a hoarder, but it's like.. Why do I have all this stuff, and why am I paying taxes for a house to keep stuff I haven't used or needed for years? Sometimes I wonder what it would feel like to be a homeless guy with a credit card..

I came back to Oregon, moved to Washington in 1999 and then 2006 was in Missouri (Misery) for 2 years, then back here since 2008.

@Mikeolder, you are part of a dying but very needed breed... someone who actually has technical skills. There are so many companies looking for skills like yours that you could probably work as long as you want. With that said, if you don't enjoy what you do you should stay on your retirement course. I enjoyed my career for most of 35 years in my industry but really felt burnt out the last few years. The money was good, so I hung in there.

I was pushed into retirement at 63 due to Covid. I haven't missed the stress at all. As long as you have a hobby or something you are passionate about, if you are financially able to retire you should. But you may never find that if you are working 12 day workweeks. Start finding a work/life balance a couple of years before you retire and you should have no problem.

Welcome to the forum!

It's not that I don't enjoy my job.. It's that ever since the U of I stopped offering step increases and pay hasn't kept up with the private sector, we cant get anyone decent to apply and we're all over whelmed with work.. I hate to admit it since I'm a conservative, but these policies have been put in place since 2011 when governor Culver (D) lost and Branstad (R) was elected and probably the reason my previous job was privatized.
