Hearing Aids

Here is my 2 cents for what it's worth. I'm hard of hearing!!! So there get over it. I was told by an expert (audiologist) that it has nothing to do with heredity. I have been wearing aids of one sort or the other since my retirement. My paternal G-Mother was, my father was, I am & so is my daughter. You want me to hear then speak up, clearly. Pronounce the words correctly and don't mumble. I suggested to my hearing savant wife that if she's getting tired of repeating herself to use her expensive smartphone to text me.

I have to watch TV with subtitles, use your phone for your subtitles. Everybody has a phone and checks them ever 2 minutes, so why don't you. I'll still wear the aids but don't expect me to answer with the right response, unless you give it some effort. Aids are just that, they irritate my ears, everything sounds tinny except the dog's bark. I've had my ears checked- rechecked & cleaned by professionals through the years but it hasn't helped much, thanks to the powers that be, they have at least made them affordable.

Working in a data center without ear plugs for 50+ years will damage your hearing.

I've had this same experience and have researched it, turns out that sound engineers for movie productions are designing the audio for large multi-speaker systems, such as found in a movie theater. Most flatscreen TVs have small, low fidelity speakers that typically face down or to the rear. One solution is using Closed Captioning, which is what we do for streaming Netflix. Adding good quality external speakers, either wired or wireless is an option for most.
A sound bar can help too.

I use headphones without aids (Bluetooth & the squeal is a heart attack) to watch movies on my computer, it's better than nothing but don't ask me a question without tapping my shoulder to get a response.

The sooner you treat your hearing loss, the better the results.

Hearing aids are getting better and the prices are coming down.

Don't go by other people's experiences. Have a demo of the hearing aids you want to buy and can comfortably afford or better yet have them loan them to you for a weekend.

And last, get recommendations of the person fitting you, not the company. Many good hearing aid companies have for various reasons, mistakenly employed fitters that are more interested in your wallet and not your hearing.
That said, there are many more good ones out there.

:) I know! I hate being such a bore, but better a bore than a hearing aid, which only aggravates the problem by distorting sounds and emitting loud electronic noises. Foreign accents, telephones and certain soft voices are the worst, I hand over a card suggesting email communication.
You have never had a hearing aid! I can tell, I have been wearing them for a few years now. My hearing is much improved with my hearing aid. It is almost as good as when I had normal hearing. If you have had a hearing aid, it must have been an ear amplifier and not a true hearing aid. That is the only way you could make your comment! Hearing aids do work!

You must be purchasing 'Junk' hearing aids....I have none of your problems with mine...they work very well!

:) You're right, Timewise 60+, you're very perceptive! Never had one, don't want one, heard too many horror stories. I live alone, who am I going to listen to?

🤭 I’m tempted to use that with my husband, but I won’t. Yes, I have an issue. He’ll talk around a corner or when I’m doing something loud. His speech pattern has changed too because of illness. We’re both at fault.

Right I bought my first aids for $1400 from Costco, they worked OK. I'll be d***ed & won't again spend thousand's on something that costs less than $100 to make. As said I could have had a questionable audiologist (Expert!!!) selling his brand. I know I had 'flakey' professionals cleaning my ears, still painful after one year, each hearing problem is different, there is no right answer.

The things are only good for 5 years. I've always said it's all about money!

No hearing problem for me, so far, but I am surrounded by them. Mom is now almost completely deaf. Bf is deaf in one ear my & two favorite neighbors are deaf and closest FF is deaf. :(

I'm fine thanks, but hoarse from screaming. So fix your ears if you can.

They could be top quality.
M It depends on the type and severity of the hearing loss. It depends on how soon it was treated.
People often times expect too much out of their hearing aids. They do not restore normal hearing. They can only work with the hearing you have left. Hearing aids are actually very good these days.

For my Costco aids, i got tired of other people digging around in my ears, testing, asking 'Can you hear me now?' I just said Yes, Great! let me get outta here!. I lied & so do most others. I have little patience with the BS.

Hearing loss is very frustrating!! I'm thinking of a few patients who were probably trying to escape my help!

@Mizmo was kind enough to steer me here after I just this morning started another such thread.

I’ve heard that prices are way down for aids you can buy online and have shipped to you. My Costco hearing aids worked fine for me and I wear them a lot. But recently I lost one. Their policy is they will only replace one and since my young dog chewed one up when she was a puppy, I won’t get another from them.

Since these worked fine for me I’m hoping the new ones you can order without an audiologist will work too. With wearing masks and glasses too I’d love to use ones which can affordable be replaced as needed.

I wonder if anyone hear has some of these lower cost aids and if so which brand?

One thing to mention, I have spent more time than I want researching hearing. Yes, prices are down but from what I've read (it's from the internet so it must be fact!) don't buy the amplified ones make sure they are actual aids. (Here)

The amplified ones are nothing more than 'TV Ears' that used to be advertised on TV, & give you squealing & distortion.

Good luck!

Bought these from Amazon last week, Hope these will help ME!!!

I too have Costco hearing aids (Phillips). Prior to these I had a pair that were purchased back when only so called 'experts' were allowed to sale them. They cost in the thousands of dollars $3-4K as I recall. I paid just over $1K for my Costco's and they work as well or even better than my expensive ones...

Good luck on finding another option, let us know how that all goes...

Yes I've been satisfied with mine too. But having lost a second unit and being that they won't give me another free replacement, if an equal quality can be had I can better afford to pay for future replacements. Masks, glasses and hearing aids are a recipe for bankruptcy even at Costco prices. I don't regret the expenditure, only the likelihood of further replacement costs since my wife's medical issues mean we will be in perpetual lock down mode.

I got a set of hearing aids.
Wore them for about 1 week, then stopped. What a pain they are, always futzing with them. Never getting it right.
The hearing aid place I went found out that my medical plan pays $4,000, 100%....of course they charged the whole 4K.
I get a military disability check each month because it happened when I was in the service.

Now I call it 'selective hearing'.

I just bought them from Amazon. Should arrive Wednesday. Thanks again!

My mom was just tested and the place recommended the Phonak Audeo L30 rechargeable aids (no surprise, they are a dealer in this brand!). Just wondering if anyone else here has used this brand...any issues? My mom's out of pocket will be $2400 for the pair. Is this expensive compared to other brands? She is reluctant to pay the price but really needs them!
