Hearing Loss & Denial

Get tested and stop denying that you have a hearing problem, cause believe me, it will only get worse. I KNOW. Continually turning up the TV and driving others crazy, buying accessory speakers or cheap hearing aids from TV commercials and other electronic accessories ain't gonna do the job.

Thanks Lon! I have a male friend, sixty one, who refuses to admit he has a hearing deficiency. In order to be heard, I must
pitch my voice up an octave, speak up, and still repeat much of what I say. In short order, both my voice and temper are frayed.

My grandmother would never admit she had a hearing problem. She had the TV on so loud I couldn't stand to be in the room. She never did get her hearing tested, just refused.

My in-laws used to do that. I don't think either one ever had a hearing aid, but in their later years the TV volume would make the walls buzz.

You got that right,Lon. I am so tired of my husband telling me to turn up the volume if I can't hear when it is the tone of the voices I have trouble with. It has been 4 years since I got my hearing aids and now they tell me I need new ones. Can't afford thousands of dollars again. I may try the ones from the big box stores. I hear that many people are happy with them at a fraction of the cost. One draw back, with the expensive ones I get free batteries. I have to really figure out the cost.

Loss of hearing and/or eyesight have to be a real curse as a person ages. My hearing is great, and I take extra precautions to avoid exposure to noise, and wear good hearing protection when I'm doing my "noisy" tasks...chainsawing, running the log splitter, mowing and trimming, etc. However, my old Dad had Macular Degeneration, and I saw what that did to his lifestyle in later years...so I follow the eye doctors recommendations closely, and take extra vitamins to hopefully avoid that issue. Sometimes, it seems that the "Golden Years" are more like Tarnished Brass.

Joke: The old man said he was not hard of hearing he just had heard enough

My dad subscribed to this theory -- when he didn't want to hear what was going on, he'd just turn his hearing aids off. It used to frustrate me something awful when he would do it when I was trying to argue with him about whether I should or should not be allowed to do something -- he'd just reach up and turn his hearing off and I knew I was done

Before my wife and I put in our hearing aids, it's like an Abbott and Costello routine. Huh, what and sometimes it gets down right frustrating. We both have the behind the ear units. Very comfortable and almost invisible. Mine are due for an update, but the cost is out of my range for now.

Hi Ruth - the cheapest high quality hearing aids in Australia come from Costco which I think is an American company. The batteries are also very inexpensive. I paid over A$6,000 for my latest ones from a large hospital. I have some handy HA accessories though that work through Bluetooth from my mobile phone, TV and volume control. The BT also connects with a small microphone which I use in large gatherings so I can hear those at the other end of the table or wherever. The other day at a meeting, I went to the Loo and could hear everything the group were saying whilst sitting on the throne.

I tried the hearing aids from Walmart, had to send them back, they did not work for me...they might work for someone with mild hearing loss. I bought my last set from Costco also.

It's a shame that people who need hearing aids can't afford them. Why doesn't Social Security cover it or our supplement from Medicare.
My Mom had to have one, Dr said 2 but she said no, an that one was around 3 G's, I so glad she had the moola to buy it. She still didn't
hear half of what we said....however.....if you didn't want her to hear something she darn sure did, ya know how that goes. Bless her
little heart.
