"He'll call you back later" comment

When offices tell me that the boss or someone will call be back later or today,

they rarely do, in my experience. It's baloney. I have caller ID so I know.

That phrase is like saying "see ya later" or "thanks a million". Secretaries

are always telling me that he or she will call me back. I m still waiting. If
they do call me back it is MUCH later after I lose patience.

Do you know what I mean? Do you do this? I'm talking about businesses,
not friends. I figure that if the phone call is in their self interest (such as a sale)
then they will call back. Otherwise the phrase means nothing.

I haven't found that, but I'm in Canada. Any calls I make to a government agency have a call center, where you wait for a rep to come on the line, sometimes it might take a little while. Otherwise, but in my experience most businesses do call back, it's just good customer service.

Yes I agree whenever I'm told someone will call me back they verrrry rarely do..with the exception of my doctors' surgery...

Yes we can hang on forever until they find the supposed right person for you to talk to...but even then they may not have the info to hand so they'll promise to call back , but they rarely do.. verrrry irritating because then you have to go through the whole rigmarole of ringing them again and being passed from pillar to post . Now I've learned always to take the name of the person I spoke to so if I have to call back I just ask for them direct!!

I agree. They often just want to get rid of you so they can go on with their day.

Yep along with wanting to see how serious you are about contacting them about business or a problem. If they get a return then they might take you more seriously if they are not purposely avoiding you in particular.

When I've been in phone answering positions I've always been careful to say "I'll ask him to call you back" instead of "he'll call you back." No sense compromising my own integrity when I can't make my boss do something.

If anything makes me tetchy it's those people who don't call back. It's the same with emails and even on business web sites. Do they want customers or don't they. I'm thinking about downloading the programme that lets you know whether your email has been opened or not, that would stop, 'oh I didn't get your email.'
