Pookie

Crazy Cat Lady
Location
Western NC
Hi, y'all! I'm retired Army (boy do I miss it) and I work in customer service at Walmart (which explains why I miss the Army). I'm 54, a wife, mom, and grandma.

We have eight cats and one huge dog. I'm the crazy cat lady in our neighborhood, but luckily no one has reported me and brought in an intervention team.

I love writing, reading, gardening, cooking, music....and other things.

I'm in Western NC, in these gorgeous mountains and we live in a fairly small town in a great community. My daughter is a nurse in the Navy, her hubby is a Marine and I have a wonderful grandson.

I look forward to seeing everyone on the boards. This looks interesting!

Thanks for having me here. :)

Welcome Pookie, from southwestern Vancouver Island. Are you named after the little white rabbit with wings?

I have no idea! I stole my name from one of my cats. There's a very funny story behind Pookie's name but it involves wonderful black neighbors and too much political correctness....on my part, not theirs.

I'd better explain it. Pookie is a grey and white cat. Saavy is a black cat. When I got Pookie, her actual name was Spook, because she looked like a grey and white blur around the cage she was in, like a ghost. So I named her Spook. So we had Spook and Saavy.

We were in the back yard trying (unsuccessfully) to harness and leash-train Spook and Saavy. We were encouraging Spook, saying, "C'mon, Spook! C'mon, girl....."

Saavy was doing fine, but our African-American neighbors were watching this and they thought the black one was Spook. They thought it was hilarious that we had named a black cat Spook. They came over to the fence and thought it would be a great idea to take the black cat in (who they thought was Spook) to the vet and give her a middle name of "Spearchucker." They were laughing!

Craaaaaaaapppppppppp!!!!! I didn't really get it, then I explained the grey and white one was Spook, because she reminded me of those ghosts in those old 50's and 60's horror films where the ghosts are grey and white. They reminded me Spook was a term for black people in the 60's and 70's....and I'd forgotten that!!

Then we all cracked up because they were thinking it was funny, they had the wrong cat...and we all laughed. I was still horrendously embarrassed, so I did call the vet the next day and amend her name. I moved the S to the back of her name, making it Pooks, and it morphed into Pookie.

The African-American couple are dear friends to this day, and we still laugh about it. Saavy is short for "Saavik" in the Star Trek series. In Vulcan, "Saavik" means "little cat." It's fitting, she's a runt and now as an adult cat, she still only weighs 4 pounds and hasn't lost the kitten look.

And every time our friends come for dinner or drop in for a visit or whatever, they always say, "Where's Spearchucker at?"

I love these folks!!

Welcome Pookie, from the central California mountains. You live in a beautiful state. We spent a few months near Reilgh several years ago.

Thank you! I've heard the central California mountains are beautiful. You live in a gorgeous state as well.

My daughter and her family live in Monterey and that bay and everything is lovely! I only had three days there but....wow!

Pookie, that story is hilarious! I think you should post regular stories about your life on the diary thread. I bet you have some good ones!

Oh dear. I have tons of stories like these. I even wrote a book about Pook and Saav. Most are fiction but with real-life ties. I imagine Pook and Saav talking and using computers....that's where the book came from.

I imagined conversations between Pook and Saav. In my book, Pook is learning PaintShopPro and Saav is learning journalism and writing. Here is a conversation between Pook and Saav:

Pook: Bleah! This dumb PSP thing stinks!

Saav: No it doesn't. Why do you say that?

Pook: Because it won't fix this picture! This is terrible!

Saav: That's not the program's fault, Pooks. You really do look like that.

Will this crazy stuff work here?

And, oh dear...I have Walmart stories that are true.

This woman came up to the service desk. She had something in a bag she wanted to return.

She: I have a return.

Me: Okay.

(She pulls out a USED pregnancy test and plops it on the counter)

She: I'm returning this 'cause it's wrong!

Me (Urrp): I'm sorry, but blood and urine products are not returnable. I can't help you with this, I'm sorry.

She: You better ********* do something about this! It was wrong, and I'm pregnant!

Me: I'm sorry. I can't get you a refund, because anything that comes into contact with blood or bodily fluids is not returnable.

She has a hissy. I call a manager to the service desk. Manager tells her the same thing.

She: Ok, whatever. It's a defective product and I want my $1.97 back right now!

Who in the world would put their trust in a $1.97 pregnancy test?

What really bothers me is that she's pregnant. In about 19 years (or earlier) we'll have her daughter coming to the service desk saying she wants to return a used pregnancy test.

Here we go again!

Hi Pookie!

wave.gif Hi Pookie, I'm from the Western end of Tn.and is not at all like Eastern end of Tn.. but just as lovely , I might add.. we have had cats all our married life and I loved your cat tales.. and the story about Pooks.. too funny.. :D

I know you will like it here,... look and browse around and get to know the forums and if you like word games, there are plenty on Games .. lots of fun times there too. Nice to meet you..

Thanks, y'all! I started a thread on Pookie's Writes and Stuff or something like that.

Wow, y'all are from all over!

I can't believe this. I've been here barely 24 hours, posted a rather slightly racial story about a cat, and haven't been tossed out on my tail yet!

This is gonna be fun! Thanks so much!

BTW I am right next to Flat Rock. There's not a dang thing flat about that town. Either someone was from the Alps or they had a drinking problem to name anything like that with a word like "flat" in it.

Now, if you take the hike up from the Carl Sandburg home you'll see a large, relatively-flat expanse of rock. That's THE "Flat Rock". Of course, North Carolina flat and Central Florida flat are two different animals.

Yep! And that's the only flat thing around there. Some houses have slanting decks...go figure!

I figure flat is pretty much a slope where when you walk up the slope, you don't go into cardiac or respiratory distress.
