I started lurking here yesterday after a google search led me here. Stayed up until 2 AM reading various posts and got back on today to read some more. I'm happy to have found a place where seniors can discuss the various aspects of aging and retirement and it seems to be a place where posters are quite helpful. I'm currently on the cusp of retirement. I have a lot of ambivalence about nailing down a firm date, probably because it feels like such a permanent step. Maybe the end of this year or the middle of the next. Anyway, I am glad to meet you all!

Hi, Lemongrass, welcome! 🙂 The thought of retirement can be disconcerting, but you'll be okay. It just takes a little while to get used to it. Make yourself at home, it's nice to have you here.

You're in luck we've got a new Member here this week who lives in Germany.... (y) you might have something in common..but anyway do feel at home here, we're mostly a friendly bunch spread across a few countries..

Welcome. I was interested in your mention of the decision to retire. It was sure worth it for me, but it was also one of the bigger approach/avoidance conflicts of my life. For years, I could only long for retirement, but when it came time to make the move, there are all kinds of things I had never thought of that came into play. And the decision is often final, or at least I thought it was.

All that aside. I love retirement. These are the most contented years of my life. Sure, I miss skiing down the mountain at breakneck speeds and scoring points in a basketball game and back packing into remote and high mountain lakes, but I have never felt this much contentment before. It didn't all just happen on the day I retired, I had to take time to let it wash over me, and it just keeps getting better. I had to learn to accept slower speeds and shorter hikes, but Wow! Just Wow!
 
Welcome, Lemongrass! I too, hope that you find yourself enjoying interacting with us, and that you find value in spending some of your time with us. :)
