Help! I Need Some Sugar Free or Low Sugar Dessert and Low Sodium Snack Ideas

What sugar free or low sugar desserts do you eat that you consider delicious? Same question about snacks. Feel free to include recipes. I made something very simple and it was good. I crumbled up one Murrays sugar free chocolate chip cookie into a small tin (I get when I buy the mini, personal size pies). I put sugar free Snack Pack chocolate pudding with a little agave mixed in, on the cookie and topped it with whipped cream, which is actually low in sugar. I love desserts and sweets and I feel I need more ideas about how to enjoy low sugar versions of these things.

I find that most of the snacks that are low in sugar are high in sodium. Since my blood pressure has been too high over the last couple of months, I don't need high sodium choices. Those of you who do not have diabetes may have some good ideas as well.
 

I keep an assortment of no-sugar-added fruit cups on hand.

I keep a stash of dark chocolate chips on hand to eat/melt on my tongue.

Chocolate milk or microwave hot chocolate made with sugar-free chocolate syrup and unsweetened almond milk is another low-calorie snack.

Ah, the curse of a sweet tooth & being diabetic at the same time! :giggle:
I keep pieces of frozen banana in the freezer. They're very sweet if you wait until the peel has lots of brown spots on it (which indicates the starch has converted to sugar). When they're frozen, they take longer to eat. A whole banana may be too much sugar for diabetics (27-35 gms), but a couple of bites aren't too bad & they're sorta like candy when frozen.
I'll also have a couple of squares of dark chocolate - around 3 gms sugar ea. Dark chocolate, at least 72%, not milk chocolate, which is mostly sugar.
 
I'm currently addicted to Quest Peanut Butter Cups. The first time I tried them they were a little disappointing since I expected a true peanut butter cup, but after a few times eating them I love their taste. The package says they are 190 calories with 15g fat, 13g carb, 4g fiber, less than 1g sugar (but has 8g erythritol, but I guess my digestion isn't sensitive to that type of fake sugar) and 11g protein.
I have a hard time stopping at just one package, but if I can control myself for a half hour or so, then their fiber kicks in and I feel well fed/no cravings.
The Walmart app was limiting how many I could put in my 'cart', so now I have a monthly subscription of them sent from the Quest website.
 
Do a search on such recipes on the Internet....there are dozens.
I realize I can do a search but also wanted to get ideas from our members. In fact, I have a book here with diabetic recipes.
@hollydolly since Jello contains pork (gelatin), unless they've started using Kosher gelatin, I can't eat it. The other option would be to find a halal gelatin dessert. I never found Jello to be satisfying by itself. But adding bananas sounds good.

@Timetvir and @AnnieA I usually don't like Stevia. I bought Stevia packets years ago and another time packets that had a Stevia blend (forgot the name of the product). Each time I gave them away and the people I gave them to didn't like it either. :) But I took a chance and bought Russel Stover sugar free chocolate mint candies that now contain Stevia which they subbed for another ingredient. I was surprised to find I still like them.

@HoneyNut I'll have to check out those Quest peanut butter cups. This is the first I've heard of them.

Not sure if this fits in with your dietary needs but, if not, perhaps you could adjust it to suit?

I take some low fat (live) yogurt, add some berries (raspberries, blackberries, stawberries etc) and sprinkle with some chopped nuts (almonds, walnuts etc).

Found this on YouTube which is a similar idea. I don't like sugary things so I wouldn't use something like granola. I have tried adding a little honey but mostly I use fresh fruit and yogurt with a sprig of fresh mint on top and a wedge of lemon. I guess you could add a little blob of low sugar, diabetic jam or something similar? (y)

 
You don't need to use sugar to sweeten something. Dried fruit is naturally sweet and can be added to most desserts. I know that fruit produces its own sugar, so naturally you do need to be careful how much you use, but you will be adding some extra goodness as well as sweetness.
 
These are delicious and typically have 10g sugar and 125-150mg sodium.
I just noticed my favorite isn't pictured here...Blueberry Muffins!
They also have Apple/Cinnamon, Mushroom/Cheese Frittata...Oh, tons more choices!
(Costco carries Blueberry, Spinach Frittata. and chocolate)

There are some icky tasting stevia products. I've had the best luck with liquid Splenda stevia ...confusing that Splenda makes it and it's stevia, not Splenda (sucralose). NuNaturals is a good powdered choice.

Dried fruit is healthier because it's not processed like sugar. But when fruit is dehydrated, removing the water makes the natural sugar concentrated. Not a problem - if someone is not diabetic. If someone is, it spikes blood sugar just like any sugar.
 
Paleo recipes tend to have good, low sugar dessert recipes. Just do a search for Paleo desserts and you may get a few good ideas from that. I personally love dates. They are so sweet that they often quell my sweet tooth quite nicely.

Inside this bag are 6 individual packets of frozen smoothie portions.
All you add is 1 C milk and 1 C water (or juice). I personally use Oat-ly & water.
I usually add a little more kale because kale is a miracle for me.
Without kale my legs and feet start to hurt.
I can't taste the kale...only the berries. It's delicious!

a few years back, I made a New Years resolution to try and start eating 'healthier' so, I basically eliminated simple carbs and refined sugars from my diet.

I discovered a recipe for 'black bean fudge' made with tinned black beans and coconut oil. I thought that maybe the recipe was parked some where on my hard drive but not.

a quick google search brought of recipes and actually the fudge was quite palatable. sometimes I added nuts or different extracts to vary the end product. I lined a bread pan with parchment paper then add the mixture.

I also filled an empty garlic powder jar with raw rice and used it as a mini-rolling pin to spread the mixture evenly in the pan.

after about a month, my palate adjusted to eating low-carb. this 'attempt' lasted till summer and I lost some 40 pounds. the weight loss was not the original intent.

google the fudge and give it a try. here's hopin' you like it.

I would find it really difficult & painful to eat too much raw kale. When I have eaten it, my jaw & teeth hurt from trying to chew it.

No problem. I've been aware of the Kale warning for a few years at least...when the warning first hit the internet. I have a fruit smoothie about once a week and the kale is not raw...in that the blender pulverizes it which is more effective than cooking. But everyone can ask their doctor for advice since we're all different.

You can actually eat too much of any foods. You can get too much Tanic Acid from Bananas that can negatively impact your microbiome (or gut health). But Bananas have so many good things for you as well as Kale so you just have to not overindulge.
But don't avoid it entirely and miss all the amazing health benefits benefits.

But I thank you RadishRose for posting this for others who may not know.
I didn't think to mention that in my post. Oh, and I'm not on Warfarin or any drugs.

Trish, those look really good! I'd probably just use Activia which is what I buy. It's sugar content is not as bad as having a piece of pie or cake. 😃
@Lara..I've never seen the Garden double chocolate, banana chocolate chip or blueberry muffins but I believe I've seen something similar to the veggie cakes (different brand though). They look very good.
@Mike I am trying to get more into fruit. I've started buying oranges again. Some of the other fruit either seem tasteless, look peculiar or on the Dirty Dozen produce list. I also buy frozen mango chunks and frozen cherries.
@win231 I've also seen warnings about kale. Don't care for the stuff myself.
