Helping My Mother Quit Smoking

Hi SandyR. I listened to that with great interest.
It is a dirty habit; my husband smoked for over 30 years and went "cold turkey" giving it up. He said when he got the craving, he reached for barley sugar sweets., which did help. Once it was out of his system he never smoked again. It can be done. A friend of mine smoked from when she was 14 until she was 78 and ended up on oxygen with chronic lung decease. She spends her days in a Nursing Home gasping for air. It's a terrible sight. And now Vaping seems to have taken over from cigarettes with the young people., the Vapes are just as deadly as they have nicotine in them.

If people just realised the enormous suffering in store for them from disease, they wouldn't take it up. I feel sorry to see young smokers but impatience when I see old people smoking, especially outside hospitals. I know someone who is nearly 90 who still smokes despite having had cancer three times. Ludicrous!

'lung decease' is actually a very accurate term!

There are tow pressure points on the ear, one is to
stop smoking, the other to lose weight, one at the
top of the ear and the other on the lobe I believe,
I can't remember which one is for smoking, or losing
weight, you will need to try yourself to find out.

Sorry.

Mike.

Are you serious ? If that was actually true, everyone would be doing it. The truth is that "quitting smoking " is all about NOT SMOKING. I smoked for years, and I quit by reducing the number of times a day I smoked, and extending the time between smokes, to the point where I was only smoking 3 a day. THEN I stopped smoking . Period. JimB.

I don't know Jim, I was told by a Doctor many years ago and
again, by a homeopathic practitioner, also many years ago,
I never tried it, myself, but two sources at different times in
different places, boosts the probability I thought.

The lose-weight one seems to be true as one person told how
to lose weight, by squeezing your ear.

Mike.

Similar to acupuncture points in those areas for smoking or weight loss. Not for me, no wish to be a pin cushion. šŸ˜…

Smoking is an addiction. And the only way to stop smoking is to want to stop. Without that determination to stop, you can't. One thing nonsmokers don't understand is that smoking is quite pleasurable, as well as addicting. There are supposedly all these "ways" to stop smoking, but self determination is the vital component. You have to want to stop. Only you can give yourself that.

After 45+ years of smoking, the "wanting to quit" was the only successful approach I tried.

Thanks for sharing, OSCash. Thankfully, I've never smoked, other than trying it when I was very young. Didn't take me long to figure out I couldn't breathe! I have friends that smoke and it's hard to watch them coughing and rasping and keep my mouth shut... They already know.

Hard to imagine they continue to smoke, but I've seen it too.

My son has just started to quit smoking, into his 7th week. I said I could see how his complexion was looking much better. I asked him how much money he has saved so far, and he said $1,200.00. I read somewhere that Australian smokers pay approx. $54.00 per packet of 25 cigarettes, so much higher than overseas countries. I was watching on the T.V. the other evening a young woman, maybe about 19 with a small toddler on her lap, she was Vaping and she put the Yape to the little one's mouth and it sucked on it and it immediately started to cry. She and her friends started laughing. She should be arrested for such an act.

I quit smoking 30 years ago and I still miss them. The year I quit was the worst year of my life.

I have two brothers. One of them, like me, smoked like a train for 25 years and is healthy now at 78. The other brother never touched a cigarette, ate well and exercised, and sadly he's the one who has died of a very painful cancer.

Each person has to decide for themselves. Does their hobby or habit have health risks? Is the pleasure it brings worth it to them? I know people who brag that they have no bad habits, but they ride motorcycles, spend too much time in the sun, eat lots of red meat, text and drive, etc. Unfortunately we're all going to have to go sometime.

I am a smoker but I choose not to do it anymore. I am about 10 days from my two year anniversary. I have done something I thought I would never be able to do. I still want to, I miss it but I wake up everyday and say I am not going to smoke today. I realized I was an addict and I was the only one who could change that. Does not mean I will never be mean or judge anyone who smokes. I know how hard it is to stop and they have to make the choice for themselves.

Congratulation, Blessed! You've accomplished a really hard thing. As time goes by you'll think about it less and less and the rewards will add up. At this time in my life I would have no social life at all if I still smoked. None of the 16 members of my book club smoke, none of the friends I go to lunch with smoke, none of my neighbors smoke. The only times I think about it now is when I go out to sit on the porch, and that's probably because I used to do all my smoking on the porch to keep my family from having to breath it..

That's true about thinking less and less about it. One day you'll realize you've stopped counting the time and it's truly a non issue in your life.
