Hi, I am just recovering from hemmroid surgery on feb 13. [still blurry from valiums].Anyway I was having trouble urinating. Wife took me to ER where they stuck a a cathter in me .They said i had a liter and half of urine.Have to keep it in til feb26. My next procedure is an Inguinal Hernia. I have a feeling that I'm gonna need another dreaded cathter! What the heck! Never had any operations before and now all this .... I know I should be grateful ; nothing is life threatening ... gonna be laid up for a while. anybody ever deal with cathters? [My worst nightmare].....just venting

I went though it a few years back. Once the doctor got ahold of me, it was appointments every month. Urine volume tests, with cathaters, all kinds of test, which I felt were a waste of time. Now, 15 years later, I’m doing just fine except for enlarged postrate. Never went back to him again. Never will.
Had hemmoride surgery too, but could urinate okay. Thank heavens.

Many years ago when I was working in Rochester Mn., I went on a tour round the Mayo Clinic. At one point the lady guide related that when she needed Hemmorhoid surgery, she enquired at the clinic about having it done there. When she was told what it would cost she said, "I told them where they could stick their hemmorhiods".

i U nderstand about the cost. My work has good med coverage , grateful as hell. Anyway ; for my hernia surgery ,they say i may need this stinking cath again. Must have a slow recoverying bladder or something . Any former Med people here? Thanks in advance. [

My husband had to wear a catheter for a few weeks after hip surgery. Other than having to empty it out, he wasn't in any discomfort.

well its been a week and a few days. healing but still get get some muscle spasms once in a awhile. Ibuprufen ok to take at this age ? I 've been told to stay away from them in your 60's.

I'm 72 and on the rare occasion that I have muscular pain, ibuprofen is the only thing that works.
Perhaps ask your doctor or pharmacist?

I had an Inguinal hernia repair some years ago. It was performed under local anaesthetic and none of this catheter business or anything. Into hospital, had op (which was like a sketch from Monty Python) and back out within 4 hours with a pack of dressings and some strong painkillers.

As it happened, paracetamol and ibuprufin were adequate and the pain quickly subsided, but I had to avoid any heavy lifting for 4 weeks.

I m glad to hear your hernia surgery went well ! I'm still pretty uptight about the prodedure. March 16. Kind of afraid of the painkillers they prescribe these days.Sound like they are VERY addictive, and these doctors have no problem giving them out. They gave me opiods for this hemmroid op. Didn't use em. Didn't need em.. either.

Nothing wrong with opioids - for post-operative pain that will subside. The problem with opioids is when doctors prescribe them for chronic pain - which means the patient will be taking them for a long time. That results in addiction.

Hi ; today is feb 26 . had my hemmroid surgery on the 13th. I did have a cath put in the ER two nights after surgery because my bladder was not draining. [fast forward to today] went to urology doc , they removed it ,sent me home for a "void test". I thought I was peeing" ok" until I went back to urologist. They said no ,your bladder is full . They reinserted the cathter [ouch]. Doc says could be result of taking one Valium a day...? I sure my prostate is slightly enlarged . Next tuesday ,we try again. He may be recommending a procedure called BPH or something . Any thoughts here? ...apologize for long thread !!! Thank you.

Sometimes it takes a bit longer after a surgery. I mentioned earlier in the thread that my husband needed a catheter for several weeks after hip surgery. They did check weekly until it was okay to remove. Be patient, it won't be in forever.

My experience with taking these opioids is that every time you take one you had better drink a glass off prune juice right afterwards. They will do a job on me, and "it ain't pretty."

But when you are experiencing severe pain, you don't really have much choice. The pain following my rotator cuff surgery was pure hell for the first two days. Hip replacement and hernia operations were mild in comparison.

Just a note here: My grandfather had BPH. He needed to be cathaterized, in order to urinate. He refused. Shortly thereafter, he died of uremic poisoning. Makes you thankful that catheters do what they're supposed to do, right?

they cause alot of infections, hubby had them ,after his stroke, but caught infections everytime .....make sure they give you a course of antibiotics before .......
