Hey old timers. Was grandpa pulling my leg?

Back in the fifties, we torn down our 40 year old goat barn. In the middle of a pile of old goat poop was a giant puffball. About the size I have pictured. Grandpa said he cleaned it off, sliced it up and fried it to eat. I wouldn’t have anything to do with it. After all these years, was he pulling my leg or not?

We used to eat them if we found one that was not wormy.

Like your Grandpa we washed peeled sliced them dipped them in seasoned flour egg wash and another coat of seasoned flour then fried them in hot fat until golden brown.

I've never heard of another way to prepare them.

We also used to look for little dried out puffballs that we would pick and squeeze to release millions of spores that looked like a little puff of smoke.

I feel the same way.

It's fun to understand what is available to eat in the fields and forests but at this point I would rather swing into the local Wegman's and pick up the few things that I need.
Me too!! I spent too much time as a kid helping with the garden in every way!!!
