Well, I have two months of work left before retirement and although I don't feel like a "senior" I guess I am!
Nice to see you have members in the same boat. Looking forward to chatting and easing my way into retirement.

Hello and welcome!

Isn't it amazing how fast we got "here"?! I'm sure I was 30 less than five years ago - lol lol lol

Hope to hear from you often:D

Thanks to you all for your warm welcome. And TWHRider, you are quite correct, it is amazing how fast time goes by! I can hardly believe that I won't be working everyday in a few months. Looking forward to it, but shocked at the same time.

I didn't want to further hi-jack the "buying a house" thread with horse subject matter;)

Have you always boarded or was boarding an interim solution until you get settled in your new place?

Feel free to share any horse particulars - lol lol lol

We farmed with horses until I was five; we had a small dairy operation. My step grandad had beef cattle and raised Welsh/Morgans. Except for the year I put my 29 yo Arab/Saddlebred and 27 yo Arab/Morgan to rest, I have never known life without a horse. I am a lifelong trail rider; my favorite trails being no trails - lol lol I would just wander off into anywhere that looked interesting "way back when". I would not do that in today's world, if I could still ride - lol

My second set of Keepers consist of a 17 yo TWH; 18 yo TWH; 25 yo TWH; 27 yo Arab. The Arab was a rescue 20 years ago. The 25 yo has been with me 22 yrs, is my heart horse and my avatar pic.

The 17 yo and 25 yo both have insulin issues. The only thing they have in common is low NSC, otherwise the stuff in their feed pans don't begin to resemble each other. One needs his jaw wired shut, the other is now a hard keeper.

Just a thought for you guys, to start some kind of horse lovers thread under the Home forum, because that's where pets are located here...then, none of us would miss any horse-related discussions, that may get lost in the other various threads. Thinking out loud here, of course, I don't want to interrupt the flow of this conversation at all, sorry if I'm butting in.

I felt bad about the hi-jacking too! I rode as a kid at one of the local "rent a horse" places but didn't own my own. My daughter was quite active and we had a pony and his buddy for company when she was young, then she had a show horse. When she went to college we gave them away and as far as I know, are still in the same place. I decided at 50 that it was time to do something for me, so started taking some lessons. The only thing I could find was English (that is also what my daughter does), but just couldn't get into it, so found a lady who gave me some western training. Not that I want to compete, but I do want to be safe so lessons made sense. To make a long story short, I bought the horse I was having lessons on and continued boarding at the same barn.

Then.... last summer we saw a cute little QH that needed a home so that has become my daughters horse. I moved my guy to the same barn as her so we can ride together and it is wonderful!

So the answer is "yes" I have always boarded my horse but we did have a few backyard ponies and her first real show horse at home years ago.

I changed my avitar to pic of my guy. He is a QH/Belgian cross. Not so tall but big as a house, he's 10 yrs old and when my butt gets too big to get on him, I'm hoping to have him (and me) trained for a cart.

I bought 20 acres not far away last year and when my current house sells, I'll build. There is a trail very close by that is the "Trans Canada trail". Used be a rail line but now is an excellent trail and goes for many many miles so I'm looking forward to that.

I'm taking some courses on Equine Health from Guelph University in the fall (on-line) so hope that will also keep me busy.

I don't understand that one of your horses needs his jaw wired shut? Do you ride very much?

That sounds great SeaBreeze but someone else will have to set that up. I'm so technically challenged that it took me an hour to figure out how to put the avitar up!

OK, I tried..... Maybe it might be nice to have a special topic much like games or family? That way people could just go there if they felt in a pet kinda mood?

"needs his jaw wired shut" is a colloquialism for someone or something that can't stop eating - lollol I didn't mean that literally.

It's taken me two years but I've managed to get about 150 pounds off Joker. He is only 15.3H and does not need to stretch the weight tape to nearly 1,300 lbs. He's down to around 1,150 and the vet is happy because he can now feel Joker's ribs; if I can just keep him there.

Joker is also on a prescription herbal compound that has helped take some weight off but the real test of the success of the herbs will be spring grass. Joker has to wear a grazing muzzle 9 months out of the year, where I live, but slowing down his grass intake doesn't do anything to lower his insulin.

If these herbs don't help lower Joke's insulin, I will be reaching for the oxygen at the next blood draw. Joker's had enough blood drawn on him since 2010, to transfuse a Mini - lol lol

Given half the chance, Joker would eat the barn walls down, because his insulin issues make him think he's starving all the time. The other horse isn't like that, and his insulin issues have caused him to lose weight.

While they would both be considered Type II diabetics, if they were human, the guy that can't lose weight has true insulin resistance, and the hard keeper has something just a tad different called Equine Metabolic Syndrome, a/k/a peripheral cushings. His pituitary gland supposedly is not involved in the disease, yet it is still called peripheral cushings; probably because some of his disease signs mimic cushings but I don't know for sure.

I think it is absolutely fantastic you are taking an Equine Health Course. Especially since your horse is a QH/Draft cross. Drafts are prone to insulin issues, so diet is very critical for these horses. You can't get any more muscular/stocky built than a cross like yours, so it would be very easy to miss early warning signals of possible insulin issues. Your equine health course will really be a great benefit to you:cool:

Seabreeze, I agree with TICA, having a section for pets might be a good idea, if there is enough interest. It could be called "Pet Place" in the "HOBBIES & INTERESTS" group. It could be open to everybody's pets; pet snakes and spiders too, I guess - lol lol lol

Do you suppose the forum Owner might be open to that??

I don't know, you can always post any suggestions in forum support to find out. :)

TICA...Welcome to a fellow horseman. Between you, TWH Rider and myself we can do a lot of thread hijacking..LOL

Guess we do need our own thread, or the other members may get tired of listening to our horse rambling addiction.

Good advice Sea ! I lose track of original threads because of hijackers.

Welcome Tica, glad you have joined us on here.
