Hidden hunger: Elderly hunger is on the rise during Covid

Prior to the pandemic, one in 10 older New Yorkers was food insecure, but now that number has soared to one in five, according to a study by FoodBank NYC.

Every weekday morning for nearly 20 years, Andrew Smith has woken up at dawn. He drives to a senior center in Brooklyn and loads up a refrigerated truck with warm meals as the sun rises over New York City.

There is no reason for anyone to go hungry. Grocery stores throw out a ton. Food is wasted. I don't have the answer.

I believe some of the problem is getting the food to the those that need it.

Often times with the elderly, it is a matter of them not being able to get to the food. A broader delivery system [ think Meals on Wheels] is what's needed.......jmo

Many studies indicate that over 40% of the food in America is wasted.....expired items at the grocery stores, excess prepared food at restaurants, and even leftovers tossed out in individual households. Surely, there should be some way to put this "waste" to use for those who need help.

Good point. Delivery of food directly to homes could help many. Groceries included.

Homelessness and hunger, two things that I believe should not exist in Canada or the USofA.
And yet we, the USA, has always had both. JC said “the poor will always be amount us”, so true.
