High Football Player Hits Opponent In Head With Helmet

In this video, I saw the flag being thrown, which meant the referee is going to administer a penalty probably for unsportsmanlike behavior. This will also probably result in the player being tossed from the remainder of the game and the film will be reviewed by the high schools involved and also the governing state high school athletic association, which may result in an additional penalty.

I understand what your issue is here. Football is a very highly emotional game and players react on a moment's notice without thinking and almost immediately realized they screwed up. I have been a high school basketball official and a college baseball umpire for almost 40 years. I have seen some pretty atrocious acts on the basketball court. Not so much happens on the baseball field because it is a slower game and not so intense or emotional among the players. In one of my high school basketball games, now many years ago, I had a star player from a visiting team go up for a layup when the kid from the home team ran up and undercut him while he was in the air. The kid landed flat on his back and had to be removed from the game on a stretcher. The benches emptied immediately, but thankfully, no punches were thrown. The kid that caused the undercut was charged with an intentional flagrant foul and ejected for the remainder of the game. The school took no further action, but the state association suspended him for 5 additional games.

After reading the article and again reviewing the film, I say "Bunk!." It was an intentional hit using the kid's helmet. I did not see or read where any apology was given at the scene. I think the referee erred in not ejecting the player and may feel some pressure from his fellow officials for not having the gonads to take care of business and also maybe the state association.
