Highest Speed Limit Where You Live

Over the past month, 20 mph signs have appeared in most towns and villages here. This is widely ignored in this village, which has only two streets, as the restricted area is barely 1/4 mile long at most.

Generally speaking, major highways in New Jersey have a maximum speed limit of 65 mph. However, I'm told that troopers will allow up to 70 mph without giving tickets. As posted on the Cornell Law School site, here are exceptions to the 65 mph law:

a) Except where otherwise posted, the maximum speed limits in force on the Expressway are 65 miles per hour on the main roadways, 25 miles per hour on the entrance and exit ramps and 35 miles per hour in the connector.
(b) Maximum speed of 65 miles per hour is in effect except when such speeds are unsafe by reason of weather or highway conditions.

(c) Where signs are posted along the Expressway indicating a lesser speed within any section, no vehicles shall be operated within the section at a speed in excess of the speed posted on such signs. Traffic fines issued in construction zones shall be doubled as per State law.
(d) No vehicle shall be operated at a speed in excess of 15 miles per hour while passing through any toll plaza on the Expressway, except in those lanes designated as Express EZ-Pass where the maximum speed shall be 45 miles per hour.

The highest speed limit is 65 mph on rural interstates. On other roads, the maximum speed limit is 50 mph, though local jurisdictions can set different limits between 35 and 50 mph on town highways.
