hqdefault.jpg

Blue Thunder trailer

The government is designing a new crowd control special helicopter that can hear through walls, see in the dark, travel whisper quiet and carries an arsenal big enough to take out an entire city. Testing in Los Angeles before the upcoming Summer Games, the developers of the machine look to create enough havoc in the ghettos to have the people demand the 'copter be put into service. Frank Murphy (Roy Scheider) is chosen to be the test pilot.

They had the ultimate weapon and the perfect plan, but Murphy stole their Thunder! This film contains some of the wildest helicopter stunts ever put on film. Warren Oats, Candy Clark, Daniel Stern and Malcolm McDowell lead an all-star cast. An 8 out of 10.

I remember this as being a very good movie though its been decades since I saw it. Hey, I gotta ask...re: the title of this thread...how recent is recent? You've posted a lot of movies!

I've watched them within a few days. I have the Summer off between school semesters and have nothing to do but watch movies. I've actually watched more than I've posted...

Dave (1993)

maxresdefault.jpg

Dave (1993) Official Trailer - Kevin Kline, Sigourney Weaver Comedy HD

From time to time the President of the United States uses a lookalike double for public events. This time the President suffers a stroke while his double is in the public view. Suddenly, the double is thrust into the role of the chief executive while the President’s staff manipulate things behind the scenes. Unfortunately for that staff, Dave (Kevin Kline) discovers that they can no longer control him and he starts to actually fix the government for the good of the people.

Sigourney Weaver plays the First Lady, Frank Langella is the Chief of Staff pulling the strings, Kevin Dunn is the Press Secretary and Ving Rhames is the head of the Secret Service detail assigned to the President. An excellent Rom-Com with a taste of politics thrown in for good measure. A 9 out of 10.

Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993)

hqdefault.jpg

Robin Hood Men In Tights (1993) theatrical trailer [FTD-0104]

Mel Brooks does what only Mel Brooks can in this parody of Robin Hood. Very tame in comparison to his previous works, the comedy gold still flows with Carey Elwes and Dave Chappelle leading the Merry Men against the evil rule of Richard Lewis and Roger Rees. There is plenty of slapstick and tongue-in-cheek humor without the Blazing Saddles colorful vocabulary. It gets a 7 out of 10.

My Movie/Show history
I don't know whether to be astonished or impressed. Even when I like a movie, it sometimes takes me a couple of days to watch it. And if I'm not all that interested but want to finish because I started it, I could take me weeks to get through it. :) When do your semesters end for summer and start for fall? I know that schools in different parts of the country are on different schedules. The children down south get out earlier for summer than we do here in New Jersey, but start the fall semester earlier.

Super Fly (1972)

maxresdefault.jpg

Super Fly (1972) Official Trailer - Ron O'Neal, Sheila Frazier Movie HD

A Super Sex Machine is also a Super Fly Drug Dealer looking to get one big score and get out of the business forever. However, nobody else wants him to leave, including the cops that are making too much off of his payoffs. Ron O’Neal (Original Gangstas, The Final Countdown, A Force of One) plays Priest, the man looking to get out. The movie includes a super funky soundtrack but it drags in the middle of the film. It only gets a 6 out of 10.

We ended Mid-May and will be starting back up in Mid-Aug. There will be some professional teacher prep/development days at the beginning of Aug along with a parent/teacher meeting before school starts. All of the schools here have central A/C, so the late summer heat is not an issue. I'll be finishing up my final college semester this fall by actually teaching in a high school classroom (under supervision) and then I will have completed my BSED in History and be certified to begin my teaching career.

Stroker Ace (1983)

maxresdefault.jpg

Stroker Ace ≣ 1983 ≣ Trailer

Hal Needham and Burt Reynolds team up again to bring you a high-speed comedy. Reynolds plays the part of an elite NASCAR driver who constantly is having issues on and off the track. Stroker loses his sponsor and is forced to sign with Clyde Torkle (Ned Beatty) and drive his Chicken Pit Special. Unfortunately, Stroker did not read the contract before signing it and traps himself in a horrible 3-year contract. Now Stroker needs to find a way out by getting fired by Torkle, but he’s making so much money for the company that Torkle simply refuses to lose his meal ticket.

Jim Nabors plays Stroker’s crew chief, Bubba Smith plays Torkle’s bodyguard and Loni Anderson plays the very attractive executive assistant that everyone is looking to bed. There are also plenty of cameos for actual NASCAR drivers who were on the circuit in the early 80s. Reynolds and Needham succeed once again and Stroker Ace gets a 7 out of 10.

Our semesters end near the end of June and school doesn't start up again (for students) until after Labor Day.

All the King’s Men (2006)

maxresdefault.jpg

All the King's Men (2006) Official Trailer 1 - Sean Penn Movie

Very loosely based on the life and times of Huey P. Long, considered by many to be the most corrupt politician in American history. Sean Penn gives a very energetic performance of Willie Stark, a “Hick” who stood up for all of the rest of the “Hicks” in the state against its powerful political machine. Penn channels Long’s style of oratory, including the physical exertion he put forth while talking, but the extent of actual corruption Long was involved in is very watered down.

The supporting cast is just as impressive. Jude Law, Anthony Hopkins, James Gandolfini, Mark Ruffalo, Kate Winslet and Patricia Clarkson lead the cast, but none of their performances are as good as Penn’s. Not as good as the original 1949 Oscar-Winning Best Picture, it still is worthy of a view. 7 out of 10.

Mars Attacks! (1996)

hqdefault.jpg

Mars Attacks! (1996) - Theatrical Trailer (4K)

Based on the Topps trading card property, the world gets visited - and invaded - by Martians. The cast is VERY impressive with Jack Nicholson playing dual roles along with Glenn Close, Tom Jones, Jim Brown, Martin Short, Danny DeVito, Michael J. Fox, Annette Bening, Sarah Jessica Parker, Pierce Brosnan, Rod Steiger and many many more. Plenty of action and comedy, along with a cheer out loud moment when the aliens blow up Congress. It gets an 8 out of 10.

I loved this film when it came out. I also think these two make a lovely couple. Kevin Kline was very funny in this.

How old are you?

What subject are you teaching?
I'm 55.

I'll be certified as a Social Studies Teacher from grades 6-12. Social Studies comprises of multiple subjects: American History, World History, Political Science, Government, Economics, Geography, Psychology, State History and Sociology. It just will depend on the needs and curriculum of the school where I eventually will be working.

So you are still very young. Congratulations on getting that degree. You probably know this already thanks to the wisdom of age, but know your school district before you accept a job. Know the socio-economic climate and even know if the parents vote red or blue or a mixture of the two. Know the Superintendent - find any news articles you can about him or her. Even attend a school board meeting to see if you feel like you like the people running the place.

Chopping Mall (AKA Killbots) (1986)

hqdefault.jpg

Chopping Mall (Killbots) (1986) - Trailer HD 1080p

Less of a slasher flick and more like a Sci-Fi terror, Chopping Mall brings the future into the now. A shopping mall installs 3 track-driven robots to perform security once the facility closes down for the night. A group of teens decide to have an after hours party in the bedding store and that’s when things go wrong. Lightning strikes the server unit on the roof and the Johnny Fives (Short Circuit) begin running amuck and killing anyone they can catch.

With a cast of names nobody will be able to pick out, except for legendary Dick Miller (Gremlins, The Terminator) and a couple of quick hit wonders Kelli Maroney (Night of the Comet, Fast Times at Ridgemont High) and Mary Woronov (Deathrace 2000), terror runs rampant with actually some decent acting. Pure 80s cheese. It gets a 7 out of 10 for not taking itself too seriously and just bringing the fun.

Gorgo (1961)

maxresdefault.jpg

Gorgo (1961) Trailer #1

The story is part Godzilla, part King Kong, however this Kaiju movie is all British. Salvage sailors discover an unknown creature and capture it. Instead of taking it to a university to be studied, they decide to cash in on their find and transport it to a London circus. Everything is going swimmingly until it is discovered that the creature they captured is nothing more than an infant and the 200 foot tall mother is now on the warpath looking for her child. The 1960 FX are decent for the era. They are not up to Toho standards, but are above that for the Gamera franchise at that time. It gets a 7 out of 10.

(standing up proudly) I just watched two biographical movies, His Dudeness.
MAUDIE, 2016, Ethan Hawke, the story of Canadian folk artist Maud Lewis, with an unforgettable performance by Ethan Hawke. I ❤️this movie! Trailer on YouTube
and
THE MAN WHO KNEW INFINITY, 2015, Jeremy Irons, the story of an Indian mathematician which just dragged on (yawn). Boring. Trailer on YouTube.

I LOVE movies like those ^^^. I plan on using movies of that nature for my classrooms to help introduce actual history to my students. Movies like Charlie Wilson's War, Argo, Air America, etc... I just finished watching a controversial docudrama done in 1977...stay tuned for the inclusion of it in this thread coming soon.

The Thin Man (1934)

hqdefault.jpg

The Thin Man Official Trailer #1 - William Powell Movie (1934) HD

Part Film Noir, part comedy, this vehicle of Dashiell Hammett is pure cinematic gold. William Powell plays the retired investigator Nick Charles whose only goal is to drink all of the alcohol available in the world. Myrna Loy plays his loving wife who seems to love to needle Charles as much as she enjoys her drinks too. The chemistry between these two is unbelievable and is the reason to watch this first in a series of five movies. You just don’t see movies of this caliber made today. It gets a 9 out of 10.

Brothers (1977)

maxresdefault.jpg

Brothers (1977) Trailer

A thinly veiled docudrama based on the lives of radical black activist Angela Davis and Black Panther and prison inmate George Jackson. Bernie Casey plays the role of David Thomas, a man who was convicted for a crime he didn’t actively participate in. Vonetta McGee plays the role of the activist professor who takes up his case and looks to right a racial wrong. Ron O’Neal (Super Fly) has a powerful supporting role in the education of Thomas in the ways of life. The movie is a very slow burn with very little action but sends a powerful message in the finale. Overall, it gets a 6 out of 10.

Men in Black (1997)

maxresdefault.jpg

Men in Black (1997) Official Trailer 1 - Will Smith Movie

Will Smith is recruited by Tommy Lee Jones to join a super-secret government agency that monitors and regulates alien life on Earth. The premise is great, but the execution left plenty on the field. It just could have been much more than it eventually became. The whole production felt rushed and short shifted. It only gets a 6 out of 10.
