Hispanic Heritage Month. Post Your Favorite Contributions By Hispanics

Hopefully I can mention my next door neighbor who was Mexican/American who took pity on me when my father tried to starve me to death when I was 14. They fed me dinner so often and I was so grateful. Fortunately shortly after, I was out of that situation. By 16 I was finally home with my grandparents.

Baseball

A Hispanic co-worker friend used to tell me a story about baseball player Reggie Jackson. He said someone was saying something derogatory about him in Spanish and he understood every word...because, he said, Reggie Jackson is Puerto Rican. I didn't believe him until I looked it up. This is an excerpt from Wikipedia:

"Reginald Martinez "Reggie" Jackson was born on May 18, 1946, in the Wyncote neighborhood of Cheltenham Township, Pennsylvania, just north of Philadelphia. His father, Martinez Jackson, who was half Puerto Rican,[5] worked as a tailor and was a former second baseman with the Newark Eagles of ***** league baseball.[6]"'

Reggie Jackson played for several teams over the span of his decades long career, after which he became a special advisor to the Yankees then and advisor to Houston Astros owner Jim Crane. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall Of Fame in 1993.

Boxing

Oscar De La Hoya, boxing's "Golden Boy" won 11 titles in 6 different weight classes. I'll admit that even though I had stopped watching boxing, whenever I saw that Oscar was fighting, I wanted him to win (oh alright, that he's gorgeous may have had something to do with it ). He boxed from 1992 to 2008 and is now a boxing promoter. De La Hoya has Mexican ancestry and dual American and Mexican citizenship.

Rita Hayworth was born Margarita Carmen Cansino on October 17, 1918, in Brooklyn, New York, into a family of dancers.

Her father, Eduardo Cansino Reina, was a dancer as was his father before him. He emigrated from Spain in 1913.

Rita's American mother, Volga Margaret (Hayworth), who was of mostly Irish descent, met Eduardo in 1916 and were married the following year.

I started this thread late, so even though the heritage month is officially over, I'll add at least one more entry. I also have to mention that I have Spanish ancestry, according to my grandmother, then confirmed by Ancestry.com, so this is a celebration of my heritage as well.

This is a somewhat lazy way to post, but doing it otherwise would be too time consuming. Here is an article about note worthy contributions made by Latinos over the decades.
