Hit from behind whilst stationary

I was waiting at traffic lights there was a slight bump on my car from behind.
Looking in the rear view mirror I see this car had rolled into me.
The bump was so minor there would have been no damage as my car has a tow ball protruding.
No need to get out and check, I simply rolled down my window and shook a fist at the female driver.

What has he driver's gender got to do with anything?

I was in a drive-in line one time with someone at the order window in front of me in a pickup. There was someone in line behind me, close. The guy at the window in the pickup started rolling backwards. I couldn't moved so I honked. He didn't even look up. He continued rolling backwards. I honked again. He bumped into me. He slammed it onto park and jumped out and started towards me, obviously angry that I had the nerve to honk at him. When he go to my window I said "you just rolled backwards into me". He did a double take, realized that the drive-in window was now up in front of him, and I have never seen an attitude turn around so quickly. It was hilarious.

Be careful if someone does that to you!
“The so-called bump and run is one of the most common forms of carjacking. The thieves pray on the fact that many people just want to do the right thing and exchange information so they will get out of their car. “Always call the police right away.”

Texting causes a lot of those type accidents.

I had my son in the car last week and I was trying to change lanes. I had my blinker on for a right turn but idiot face in a large truck wasn't having any of it. I was waving my arm to get his attention and I could see he was slowly creeping up on me.
When the light changed green, he went straight ahead but grazed my car and I heard a crunch. I told my son to get his number and was beeping the car horn. He never stopped so I turned my car at the next street to have a look at the damage. I was surprised no damage was done, only the hub cap on the wheel was missing, that was the crunch I heard. I was so relieved because I thought there was major damage. These truckers think they are king of the road.

Glad it wasn't worse. Years ago (with my old car) two cars rear ended, causing the second car to hit me. It was minor and since I was far behind the car in front of me, I didn't bump into them. You are right, diligent driving is important.

I have heard hundreds of stories as to why people run into other people’s vehicles. I was sitting at a red light. I was the lead car. Another driver ran into the back of my police SUV. I saw the vehicle coming, but it was going so slow, I thought the vehicle was coming to a stop. Instead, I got whacked in the rear end. It was raining that day, so the driver used the excuse they hydroplaned. I told the driver, “I think you were only doing about 10 mph. Tell me another lie.”

It doesn’t always matter why you hit someone in the rear end. You need a really good excuse as why the accident happened.

Stopped at a light, I got beamed by this woman doing about 50. In the rearview mirror, I saw the smoke from her tires as she skidded to a stop. She cracked a hole , and split my rear bumper. We exchanged info. I called her insurance company, they were busy processing her last two accidents.
If you get some damage-what do you do? If you report it to their insurance company, your car is on record as having been in an accident, and if you trade it in, you'll lose possibly $ thousands.
You're paying for her accident regardless of her insurance.

Police here only come to accidents with injuries so you would be waiting forever.

When we lived in CA we were getting ready for retirement and we had just bought a dually because we were going to haul a fifth-wheel trailer to travel with. Anyway, a stop light had just turned from green to yellow and my husband stopped and WHAM, a guy hit the back of the truck. Hubby got out to see the damage but the guy was driving one of those lowered Hondas and where he hit was the trailer hitch and it damaged his hood. The idiot guy said he didn't stop because he thought my husband was going to be a "runner".

just before covid shut things down, was rear-ended. was stopped, waiting for a clear spot to turn into my apartment complex. didn't see it coming... and told that was probably a good thing. police showed up almost immediately... someone who saw the crash called 911. my poor old, reliable 16 yo hyundai, with over 200,000 miles on it... was obvious to even me she was totaled. back wheels are supposed to face the same way, right.

went to ER. x-ray showed nothing broken but i was DAMN SORE for weeks. the morning after was torture getting out of bed and vertical.

poor car went from being maybe a mercy trade-in value of $4-500 to about $3500 totaled.

what's a "dually"?

Glad you weren't hurt, glad there was no damage to your vehicle. My son, who is a trucker, could tell some stories about people not paying attention on the road. He sees all kinds of crazy, dangerous driving when he's on the road. He periodically posts warnings and safe driving tips on Facebook. This is what he drives:

One day traffic had been standing still for quite awhile. When it finally got moving, very slowly, some fool ran right into the back of his truck. How do you not see a big ole "mack truck" in front of you?! My son said he was driving a very expensive, fancy car that apparently belonged to his boss. I know he got in serious trouble that day.

Something similar happened to me many years ago. Unfortunately though, I was the person behind. At the traffic lights, I slowly hit the car in front. I then stared at the other driver's rearview mirror to see his face in his mirror to try and figure out what his reaction might be. I could see him looking at me in his mirror. Neither of us got out of our cars.

The lights then changed to green and the driver in front drove off. It was then that I noticed a tow ball on his car that I had hit. It seemed that the driver in front wasn't too bothered by the situation, as he probably realised there would be no damage to his car. My car on the other hand had quite a large dent in the center of the steel bumper. Along with a smashed number plate.

Later that weekend, off I trotted to a Ford dealership for a front bumper. Much to my surprise, the genuine Ford satin black front bumper was only £40 (about $55 at that particular time). I removed and replaced the bumper myself within about half an hour, swapping over the undamaged wrap-around plastic end-caps and rubber over-riders. Imagine the cost and time if it had been a modern large plastic bumper.

The car I was driving was one of these. Not always easy to judge the length of the bonnet/hood when pulling up to something. ??...or at least that was my misguided excuse to my younger self at the time.

Today most US Police departments will ask....Is any one hurt " ? If the damage is less than a certain amount, they won't send a unit. The dispatcher will say...Exchange insurance information and call your insurance company to start a report. JimB.
