Hitchhiking, have you ever, would you ever again, share your experience/story

We hitchhiked a lot when we were young mostly to go to the next town where they had pool hall where we enjoyed playing.

Sometimes we walked down a long dusty road to go swimming in the river, and would cross a railroad bridge to hitchhike back. We didn't want a long dusty walk back on a hot day.

In the service we hitched from Michigan to our base in Illinois after we went to a friend's home on leave. In uniform, we didn't stand long with our thumb out.

I have learned not to pick up men who look like bums
I picked up a guy who was obviously a bum once. He was on a very long lightly traveled road in the Nevada desert, 40 miles from the nearest town or water. Turns out he had been kicked off of a train. I dropped him in the next town and gave him the food I had. His plan was to catch another train, I wished him luck.

It was winter, pretty cold and he had almost nothing. Had someone not picked him up I suspect he would not have made it.

I was careful who I picked up, but he seemed to in real and immediate need. Can't say I have picked up any hitch hikers of late.
