Has anyone seen those commercials where this service offers to come and clean your entire house including windows, dishes and laundry for $19? Sounds like a scam to get you to sign something into a long-term contract that costs much more, or give them financial info and pretty soon money is being withdrawn from your bank. Beware: HomeaGlow (HAG) overcharges!
Summary: If you are looking for a cleaner, purchase only the initial $19 voucher (no extra hours), knowing that if you like the person you will have to pay at least $75 per hour plus a service fee for that cleaning if you choose not to spend $294 (not including taxes and fees) for a 6-month membership.
Details:
1. Don't expect confirmation for a cleaning until the 5 days or less before your requested cleaning date. The cleaner who confirmed for my July 3rd did not read my request and informed me on July 2 that she only wanted to come 3 hours instead of the 4 hours I requested. Consequently, I had to move my cleaning date to July 8 and use the expedited request process to obtain a cleaner.
2. Satisfied with services. Craig was great; I tipped him 3 times what I paid to HAG to make sure he received a decent wage. We arranged for him to come again in a month because he was not available on a date I was free 2 weeks later. I decided to use HAG to find a cleaner for 2 weeks later. Again, a person did not confirm until the week of the cleaning.
3. Difficult communication. Before my first cleaning, I asked via four different email messages to understand the vague reference to fees and taxes. Only after I utilized the voucher for 3 hours of cleaning for $19 was I informed that if I did not maintain the $49 per month membership for 6 months, I would be charged $50 (FIFTY DOLLARS!!!) per hour that the cleaner worked at the reduced rate IN ADDITION to the cleaner's normal rate AND a service fee. Respectfully, I do not require the services of someone who costs over $80/hour with all the hidden-until-you-are-stuck fees. Well known cleaning services with bonded and insured cleaners cost LESS than HAG.
Date I sent emails: June 15, July 3, and July 5. On June 16, July 5, and July 7 at 8:26 pm, I received the vague responses: "Regarding the charge for your first cleaning, if you decide to cancel prior to the end of the minimum commitment term, the cost will depend on your cleaner's hourly rate, the duration of the appointment, and applicable taxes and fees. Without the membership, the cleaning will be charged at the regular rate." At 12:15 AM on July 8 I urgently sent my FOURTH request regarding how much the taxes and fees would cost for future cleaning using $25/hour as the regular rate. The reference to taxes made no sense as per Illinois tax code, the state does not charge sales tax for services provided by a house cleaner. I added, "Personally I feel the $49 monthly fee should cover all service fees. How do you determine these service fees? Do you charge sales tax on this monthly fee as well? If so, what is the amount?"
4. Extremely high fees
HAG failed to provide a formula or detailed explanation until after the first cleaning. Then, suddenly, a $50/hour fee was added to each hour the cleaner worked and a service fee was added to the entire amount if I chose not to become a member and pay a monthly fee of $49.
I was more than prepared to pay Craig's $25/hour regular price plus a nominal service fee to forgo a membership I didn't need. I was stunned when the "regular" hourly price jumped to $75/hour to cover one of the fees HAG charged. I never did receive a full list of fees or taxes or how the amounts were calculated.
Given the poor communication, vague statements, and lack of details in the contract one signs, the fees HAG charges are ridiculously high and unreasonable.
I recommend avoiding this company.
