Republicans are six votes short of the 60 needed to advance most legislation, and Senate rules grant numerous rights to the minority party. That means if Democrats remain united, they have the ability to block GOP bills just as they did while in the majority.

Democrats have been united against House-passed legislation funding the Homeland Security Department through September, the end of the budget year, while also rolling back President Barack Obama's executive policies on immigration.

As a result Congress appears to be at a stalemate on the issue, leaving Republicans with only a few options: pass a short-term extension of current funding levels, fold and strip the immigration language opposed by Democrats from the bill, or let the Homeland Security Department run out of money when current funding expires Feb. 27.

Still PO'd over the President's EO on immigration, the GOP has attempted to derail it by tying it to the funding of Homeland Security.. RATHER than pass a clean funding bill.... OR (God forbid) craft their own immigration legislation, they have again resorted to the old brinksmanship politics to derail anything our President has done.

The optics of this are horrible, don't you think? At a time when the terror threat is at a fevered pitch around the world... is it wise to defund Homeland Security? Despite the fact that the department is funded primarily by fees, not tax dollar, it give the average person the impression that the GOP places politics ahead of security.. Just pass a clean funding bill for crying out loud and quit playing those stupid games.. It didn't work for you before, what makes you think it will work now? See... having the majority leaves the GOP holding the governance bag... and I might add.. so far they aren't doing very well.

You are correct QS, I hope the Democrats continue to hang tight for the country's sake.

It's not like there are no options for the GOP... or that the President has forced anything on them that cannot be overridden by passing Immigration Legislation. They know what they have to do.. However, it's really hard for them, because any Immigration reform they would come up with will have to please the hard Right faction of the Congress.. and the electorate. They know that would destroy their chances of garnering any Hispanic votes and that huge voting block would be against them.. SO they are between a rock and a hard place. Please the Right? OR,,, hey this is a novel idea..... Govern. Pass some legislation that the president can sign. Ya know ... do some sausage making? Don't try to force your way in sneaky amendments to necessary spending bills.. That's just cowardly and will certainly backfire as the public is going to blame the GOP for NHS shutting down.

The big money party of NO would rather see us go down the tubes rather than acquiesce to anything the President wants and they have enough rednecks and racists to assist them.

Aren't these the same folks that have been screaming about how President Obama is WEAK... and "Feckless"... and sympathetic to terrorists? Well.. now they want to defund Homeland Security? It's pretty easy to see what the motives are... just oppose anything our President has tried to do... at all costs.. even our security.

It's sad, it seems like their only goal is to go against the President and all the beneficial things our President has accomplished, and fight the opposing party tooth and nail. To hell with the American people and homeland security, they have bigger fish to fry.

What I find most amusing is the whining and crying going on over on the other side of the aisle about the Democrats "obstructing" them.. They weren't worried about obstruction when THEY were doing it were they? I think that reality is setting in. It's a lot harder to be in the majority than they anticipated.

I think this next two years will be very costly to the Republicans. Their arrogance will bring out voters in 2016 and it could end their shot at governing our country.

Not one red cent from the DHS budget goes to fund the work visa program outlined in the Executive Order. All that funding is by way of fees assessed as the visas are processed. Yet, the Republicans in Congress are trying to put the entire Country's safety as risk to give this President a black eye.

Beyond how Faux Noise and the Tea Party will attempt to show any shutdown of DHS as the fault of the Democratic Party, the real question is "What happens if there is an attack while DHS is shut down?" Certainly, the right will point at the left and visa versa... while Americans die. There are enough Republican Congressmen who are already shouting that enough is enough. Fund DHS with a clean bill!!!

Hopefully, this morning's announcement of a Federal Judge in Texas temporarily staying the Executive Order could give the Republicans an excuse to justify moving a clean bill forward to their right wing nutcases.

As usual.. it's all political theater and red meat for the base.. All nonsense.

Not to worry.... Now that that Texas Judge has put a temporary hold on Immigration reform... the GOP now has the cover it needs to go ahead and pass Homeland Security funding.. Bonner will be able to get it by his far right loonies and do a little phoney victory dance for hostage well taken!!

Breaking Breaking...Boehner just on MSNBC asking the GOP to pass a clean bill on funding DHS, says it is the right thing to do.....lordy, is hell freezing over?

I don't see he had any other choice. The Dems and what's left of the sane Republicans will get it passed... They will also protect Boehner's Speakership if need be.. It's time he stood up to the nut jobs.
