Homemade clothing of the past...

I'm 200 % with the quality gutermann thread.
I pretty much forgot about the 2 qualities........i just automatically picked up the better one.......my Pfaff machines like the smooth threads as well......comes up as error as well with some cheaper or other threads on my Pfaffs.

Yep I did a stretch sewing course way back in 1983 OMG why do we keep all this stuff ....but it’s in the folder with the instructions for making girls undies and doing the necklines of tops
so I’ve never thrown it out it was valuable info just getting into sewing a different fabric ( stretch fabric ) way back then
This is the pattern i mentioned for the kids tracksuits ....( it’s tatty I should bin it ) .and yes to buy little babies track suit back them was around the $30 mark cause it was something new on the market and we didn’t have any Kmarts or target up the Riverland where I lived at the time only a shop called Hambours . @peramangkelder

My goodness @Kadee46 your post brought back many pleasant memories thank you :)

My mother made my clothes and hers. She worked in offices so had to dress nice for work. When I became a teenager, we lived at the beach and it was the sixties. I never gave her a hard time about wearing clothes she made because she would let me pick out the patterns and materials. I dressed like Cher. Bell bottom pantsuits that were open in the back, dresses with those big poufy sleeves, short mini dresses, etc. We went to a big store called Cloth World that was huge and spend the whole day there.

One time my girlfriends and I wanted to go to a coffee house that had opened at the beach. It was the thing back then. She made all 4 of us matching granny dresses to wear. It was so much fun.

When my friends drove by my house, they could see my mother inside the window sewing on her machine. They would tell me, "your mom is still up waiting for you."

Sort of on this topic, I have to go to the only fabric store in town today and I dread it but I desperately need some thread and we are going into lockdown.

The store is sooooo small in size and half the store is sewing machines and the other half is fabric so close together that at times you have no choice but to suck in your gut to move. Maybe I will wear a girdle ;)

What an amazing thread, such wonderful photos and stories too. My wife has made her own clothes from about the age of eight, she's made a lot more besides. Her skills come in very handy when a new dance outfit is needed. Here's a couple of photos where she made both of our outfits. My shirt and pants, her dress and trouser suit.
