Photographer Benny Lam documented the suffocating living conditions in Hong Kong’s subdivided flats, recording the lives of these hidden communities. They highlight the reality of Hong Kong's housing crisis, where tens of thousands of people live in these cramped conditions because they can’t afford anything else.

Well, at least if you burn dinner or something starts to stink or mold, it is an easy shot down the toilet.

I can't imagine living like that. Especially as I have gotten older, having at least somewhat decent living conditions has become more important. When I was single, living in a house with a bunch of other guys, we each had a bedroom and shred the rest of the living space. When I moved out of that and into my own place, I had what was called a "studio" apartment which was one room with the kitchen and then living space all in one. The bathroom was down the hall. Now, I don't think I could get settled even in that environment anymore. At least my studio apartment was problem 2 - 4 times the size of that space in the picture, if not even a bit more. My first house was a 650 sq ft one bedroom. Our condo is 1200 sq ft 2 bedroom unit and it is plenty large enough for us.

When quarters are cramped to the point of what these pictures relay, cleanliness and hygiene become two serious woes.

I would literally suffocate.

The sad thing for me is that man is actually living much better than billions of people around the world including many in our own country.



I'm so thankful that I was born into my comfortable little world and have had the opportunity/privilege to maintain and improve it.

Yes, and they all want to live in England, where, the way things are going, living conditions soon will be the same as the above.
