Horrid Night. :-( Need Heater Recommendations

You would quickly go broke using 1lb canisters and canisters containing 20lbs of LP don't include the weight of the canister.
This would be to have heat for a few hours in a room or two in the event of losing electricity... I've been reading that one of them runs about 3 hours on max and 6 hours on min. I wouldn't need more than that for the short time the power would be gone in a blizzard.

That post was directed at HD, and what I thought her use case would be.

I couldn't last more than a couple hours on a buddy heater in an unheated house dressed for a day of duck hunting in sub-zero weather. I tried. Buddy heaters are only sufficient for tiny enclosed spaces like a pick up truck topper w no other heat source. Have 100's of nights doing that.

Kerosine heater is what you need.

Get a name brand. So many new brands on Amazon and so many positive reviews could be fake reviews the manufactures paid for. Therefore, look for brands that have been around a decade or so: Lasko, Pelonis, Black & Decker, DeLonghi, GE, etc. I don't know anything about propane heaters. I do know that candles can throw off a little bit of heat in a small, closed room. I've never tried putting them under a clay pot, but I think that is worth a try of you don't have any pets that can knock them over. It's an inexpensive option if you have a safe place to put them on the floor.

Also, get some insulated curtains for all your windows. Those are sold at all the major stores now. They do help.

I think I saw that make on Amazon, Kate.. I'll have another look, thank you..
I'm reading up on these now.... if you do something like this, Holly, the only real negative I've read so far is that it seems to take longer to prime for use than the manufacturer claims. One review said it took him twice as long, but I'm not really seeing that as a problem if the thing works as it should.

Okay, so it's 12 degrees right now. Lost the electricity at 11:45 a.m. yesterday and it came back at 4:30 this morning, so nearly 17 hours. Tenuous, expecting it to go again. The house is 54 degrees and I have a sore throat and earache. Anyhow, not posting to grumble :giggle: (honest!) but to ask for propane heater recommendations. We haven't had our annual monster blizzard yet, and I don't want to go through this again.

I'm looking at a Mr. Heater Buddy that uses 1lb cannisters. Are they good? The consumer reviews seem great, but so many of those are bought & paid for now that it's hard to tell if they're genuine/trustworthy. 🥶
Here's the simple search I did on Amazon USA. Hoping it helps you find a useful and reasonably priced one. Cheers!

Amazon.com : Nonelectric space heaters

Electricity and gas prices have risen her exponentially in the last couple of years. I can't afford to put my heating on for more than an hour a day..I have to choose when it's the coldest and do it then.. .

It's miserable being dressed in 3 or 4 layers inside the house, not gonna lie... and right now inside my house it's 57 deg in my house, despite the winter sun shining in through the windows... this is the usual temperature inside my house now. I feel that my warm cosy house of just pre 2 years ago.. is a long ago luxury..

When my daughter was little we only had single pane windows and no central heating.. so we used Propane heaters.. trouble was they caused so much damp inside the house...so I wouldn't be happy to get those.. again..I wish I could suggest some kind of heating for you, and I;d have it for myself too..

I hope you feel better soon Kate, Earache and sore throat does make you feel really down....
Holly, what about moving back to Spain again?

People say use a little fan heater.. but they are such high wattage I can't... however your tip about candles and clay pots is worth a try...while I'm at the computer.(y)
Have you checked out the new ceramic ones lately? They heat a small space very quickly. They take the chill off.

“Do ceramic space heaters use a lot of electricity?
They use a ceramic element that heats up quickly, and they're designed to be more energy-efficient than traditional convection heaters. A typical 1500-watt ceramic heater consumes 1.5 kWh per hour, just like a convection or radiant heater, but it's more efficient and can save up to 50% on electricity costs.”

This doesn’t answer Kate’s problem. A generator sounds like the answer for the future. I hope there are no more storms expected soon.

You guys have been fantastic with all these helpful suggestions... a heartfelt thank you! ❤️ We're going to go with the Mr Heater Buddy propane for an important main reason... kerosene causes headaches for me, and sometimes even breathing issues. A generator would be nice, but we have lost power for longer than a hour maybe like 6-7 times in 20 years, so a generator is not really in the budget. Now to get it ordered! :giggle:

the problem is our electricity prices ..and gas.. are absolutely through the roof..

I have heating..I have Gas central heating.. I just can't afford to run it... I have a small electric 2kw fan heater here.. but it's jut too expensive to run...

I put my GCH on for an hour no more.. in any one day..sometimes not at all... I'm just about to turn it on now.. because my hands are so cold I can't feel them..

Kerosine heaters do give off a "puff" of unburned fuel as they are being lit, no question.

In NY we lost power for as long as 12 days at a time and we had many 5-7 day outages so I installed a whole house generator after the house completely froze up once. The generator was not problem free by any means, but at least we a good shot at being warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

I have a buddy heater that Ive owned for decades. Mine is actually labeled "Mr Heater" but is the same thing. It will keep a room warm and does not smell. It has a CO2 sensor built in and will shut down automatically if there is a problem although that has never happened in all the years I have used it. Run on the low heat setting, it will operate for quite a while on a single canister.

I used it last week when the power went out just as the snow an cold temps hit us.

All these good reviews are very encouraging and I know it was the right choice!

Does your heater have to be mobile? We have an oil furnace that heats the main part of the house with steam heat radiators. When we extended the living room off the back of the house we moved a small propane fireplace from one side to the other (and upgraded to the next size up). The propane fire does NOT need electricity to light so keeps the backside warm - even in a power outage. We also have a propane stove/oven in the kitchen that I can light it with a match and still cook. We have a 50 gal tank outside that is on automatic fill. Our propane costs have dropped considerably so we're using it more this season.

Sounds like you've gotten some really good recommendations. Good luck!

Yes, I have 4 of them! I live in a very rural area and am totally electric so have used them several times over 29 years. 2 of the large Mr. Buddy's and 2 small ones.
