A bit about the horrors of the Immigrant Detention Centers in Australia...http://listverse.com/2014/11/08/10-horrors-of-australias-immigrant-detention-centers/

Australia has been trying to find the best way to deal with its immigration problem for a few decades now. Many people seeking asylum arrive in Australia by boat—often aided by people smugglers—in an attempt to find a way out of the horrible situations in their home countries. Now, to avoid an influx of illegal immigrants showing up on the Australian mainland, people on boats are brought to one of the detention centers that are located on islands surrounding Australia and forcibly detained.

While some people think the policy of detainment itself is wrong, the Australian government defends its actions by saying they are processing the asylum seekers’ claims and trying to find out whose claims are legitimate before they let them into the country. Since Australia is one big island, it can’t simply deport people back over the border to wherever they came from.

The problem is whether or not the policy of detainment is the right thing to do. The conditions at the facilities are often terrible, and many of the asylum seekers are forced to endure a living hell. Some of them, sadly, choose to take their own lives instead of dealing with the living conditions any longer.

OZ should be denounced at the UN and the perpetrators taken to the Hague...

We have thousands of Africans waiting in Calais.to jump a lorry or get in an unguarded container trying to get to the UK..they live in appalling conditions in a nearby woods, with just tarpaulins to cover them..women..children covered with scabies..

One of them who was interviewed said ''This is worse than Darfur!''

I feel very sorry for the people who are in Calais..however this woman who spoke up has scabies..
there is a danger these people might be bringing in worse illnesses.

In America newcomers are given a health check before they are allowed in..
at least that USED to be the case and it makes a LOT of sense!

They are not ''allowed'' in Elyzabeth..they smuggle themselves in..once on British soil they claim ''asylum''

While I don't go along with ill treatment, I can't believe that they are all innocent 'victims' of their homeland and going through the people smugglers to get to another country, instead of the correct channels, then they can't expect four star hotel accomodation.

This is the reason our government wants to warehouse refugees off shore - they are then denied access to legal advice and any appeal process.

This is the result of the latest appeal to the High Court on behalf of an Hazara man on the mainland.

[h=1]Federal Government loses High Court appeal over refugee status of Afghan truck driver[/h] by Elizabeth Byrne

The Federal Government has lost a High Court appeal over the refugee status of an Afghan truck driver who claimed he could not return to his country for fear of persecution.

The Hazara man, who was denied a protection visa by the Immigration Department, had worked for foreign agencies in Kabul transporting construction materials to and from the city.

He fled Kabul in 2011, when another truck driver showed him a letter from the Taliban which named him and urged others to do their "Islamic duty" and get rid of him.

The Department's decision to deny him a protection visa was affirmed by the Refugee Review Tribunal, which ruled the man could avoid persecution by changing jobs.
However, the High Court found the tribunal had failed to consider whether it was reasonable to expect the man to remain in Kabul, and not drive trucks away from the city.

It meant the tribunal could not make a proper determination on whether he had a well-founded fear of persecution, the Court ruled.
The man's case will be heard again by the tribunal, in light of the High Court ruling.

Give the man a break? We don't even give a break to babies who are born on the mainland.
Because they came here in utero on a boat (to be close to their mothers, naturally) they are deemed to be illegal maritime arrivals.
Our Immigration Minister is a total disgrace but hardly anyone other than The Greens will speak up for these unfortunates.

It is the snakes on the highway that make us want to leave as soon as the possible...
