Hot Cocoa or Hot Chocolate? With or without marshmallows?

I prefer hot chocolate to cocoa with whole milk, no sugar added, and a splash of vanilla extract topped with a few mini marshmallows. 😋

Hot cocoa, but not from a mix. Cocoa, sugar, mixed well and heated with some water and then some milk or almond milk and salt (important!) to taste. Yes, (real, not dried) marshmallows if available.

To cut down on the sugar, mix half and half with strong coffee!

I don't drink alcohol, but 1 cold day after coming in from working outside, a friend handed me a cup of hot chocolate with a splash of butterscotch rum. That was really tasty and warmed me up in 2 ways. 😋
Butterscotch rum, oh that sounds sooo good! I've not had rum for two years probably,
love a hot butter rum @ Stretch5881 a little in a cup of hot chocolate sounds very good. :)

@ Michael Z real marshmallows, soft and fluffy ones ;)
half strong coffee and half hot cocoa etc, sounds like a perfect mix.
Almond milk has a good taste too imo.

Yes! The reason we mix the cocoa and sugar is because otherwise the cocoa won't combine but will simply lump up. And the reason we start with a little water is because we should never boil milk (unless used medicinally). The milk is added last, and heated.

Why won't the marshmallows melt though @ Tommy
My guess would be that they changed the recipe, possible to increase shelf life(?).

A long time ago, it seems, marshmallows in hot cocoa would melt to a sweet, thick, very sticky mass. More recently (and admittedly a few years back), the marshmallows seem to more or less dissolve from the outside, leaving the centers substantially unchanged until the whole marshmallow dissolved.

This seems to be the case with both Kraft and store brand marshmallows.
